Hey Experts,

I have a question I am seeking an answer for: I have been waitlisted w/o interview at a school which happens to be my first choice. I am hoping to visit the school this summer and meet with the admissions committee. Can I send an email directly to the Dean of admissions and ask him for a time to meet when I visit the campus? I have exchanged emails with this person before, so he will recognize who I am. I personally feel it *might* be a little bit aggressive or desperate emailing him directly, as oppose to emailing the general admissions email address? What are your thoughts?

Hey there,

It is a little aggressive but I don't believe in a bad way. If you've been in touch with this individual before, I think you should take advantage of that connection. I would suggest you spend some time crafting the email to make sure you highlight an appropriate yet compelling reason for the meeting. As for desperate, well, yes, it is. But that's the nature of the game. If spun the proper way, desperation can be enthusiasm! Don't bother much with the general email addresses - they're fairly useless and this is a game of networks so leverage any connection you've got.

I prefer "proactive" to aggressive. You can mention that you've emailed before and that you'll be on campus. Say you want to take this opportunity to help them get to know you in a new light.

I think s/he'll appreciate your enthusiasm.

I am in the same situation, but at @machichi's school. I personally would think that if you have already reached out to the guy before, it won't really hurt at all. Go ahead and do it, without overthinking too much. I think I will do the same.

I agree for rocket, as well as for you, hailmary! I don't know if you got to meet Bruce Delmonico (Yale adcom director) yet, but he is so nice and responsive. I'm sure it would be seen in a positive light if you politely reached out to him for a meeting. Good luck!

Rocket: I did send the email. One Advice I got from couple people: Keep it very short and professional.

Short and professional is very wise, and for contacting the AdCom for a meeting in such situations, I think it can not try to try if you think they might be responsive. Especially if you know the person, and I have quite a lot of faith in gut instinct in such cases. If you feel they will be responsive, go for it, if you feel they will get pissed off, then drop it.

Anyhow, since you already did it, my 'advice' is more like musings :)

Let us know how it turns out.

You just want to make sure you are adhering to whatever the waitlist process at the school you are working with. Most schools have very specific policies. Your question on its face seems reasonable especially if you have developed some relationship with the dean. Just be respectful about the request and understand they may deny this request because of the WL policy
