Any idea why we have to wait until October 4th to find out the next steps in the process?

My guess is that they are probably crunching some numbers to see when they can realistically begin to send out interview invites... on the website, it says a week - 2 weeks after deadline to early December, so they want to see how Round I applicant pool is shaping up before dishing out the logistics. Just my guess.

The date was referenced in Stanford's confirmation email after submission.

Ah, OK, I submitted Sunday evening and it had no date reference - they must have added that since. Thanks!

They are probably giving the recommenders 1-2 days of grace period before they officially close R1 submission.

Last night I dreamed that I got a R1 interview invitation. Not kidding. This morning was a cruel awakening.

Ooh, official dates/deadlines just sent by email:

Quote:
Admission Process Dates

2 October 2013: Round 1 Deadline
Beginning on deadline day, the MBA Admissions Office prepares applications for review and distributes them to members of our team to read. Over the subsequent weeks, we review applications, and decide which candidates will move to the next stage.

28 October through 26 November 2013: Interview Invitations
During this period, we will extend invitations daily for interview via email. Interviews are by invitation only, and an interview is required for admission. We hope to interview between 800 and 1,000 applicants this application year.

No invitations will be sent before 28 October or after 26 November. We expect the majority of invitations to go out by 19 November. If you have not received an interview invitation by 26 November, you will not be interviewed in this round.

They also posted info to their blog about this new interview cycle - in part:
Quote:
We decided to compress the interview timeline. For Round 1, this means we will issue interview invitations from 28 October through 26 November only, rather than over the entire round. We will send no invitations before 28 October or after 26 November. We expect to issue the majority of invitations by 19 November. (We hope this prevents those of you who applied in Round 1 from obsessively refreshing your email for most of October.)

Although the final notification date for Round 1 remains 11 December, this compressed interview timeline will allow us to let you know on 26 November whether or not you still are being considered for admission. Some of you have told us that if the answer is a definite "no," you'd rather know earlier to give you more time to work on Round 2 applications for other schools. We heard you.

Your best bet is probably Stanford GSB's website, which is quite straightforward about the characteristics that make Stanford distinct. At the end of the day, you need to tailor "Why Stanford" to your own personal story. If you regurgitate a generic answer about "Why Stanford" just from its website or other resources, then you would lose a valuable opportunity to differentiate yourself.

Some admission consulting firms also publish booklets about top b-schools that also might be useful - try ClearAdmit, EssaySnark or Stacy Blackman.

Pretty interesting article on a Stanford MBA grad being the driving force behind the conservative movement of the Republican Party
