technically the canvas cannot be singed and incinerated, they need to be one or the other.

For example, you cannot have a house that is destroyed and damaged, it needs to be either destroyed or damaged.

Hope that helps.

I think the OA is D.

The context of this sentence is "Most number of canvases burned in fire are signed".

Experts comment is very helpful in this scenario.

I think the difference between options D and E lies in the meaning of the two words singed and incinerated. So lets first try to understand the meaning.

singed - burned superficially(partially burned)
incinerated - burned to ashes(completely burned)

Hence, using singed and incinerated will not be correct as it is not possible for anything to be singed and incinerated at the same time.

Hence - singed or incinerated - makes sense here.

The original sentence uses AND; if we use OR we change the meaning of the sentence: is this a possible question during the real exam?

I was going to choose E but in the end I chose D for this reason

Aren't the paintings still technically painted by famous Russian artists? Past perfect needs an action to be completed, but isn't this a general truth rather than a discrete event?

Hello MVCO2025,

We hope this finds you well.

To answer your query, in this sentence, the act of painting was completed in the past, meaning the past tense is correct here.

For example, we say "The Earth formed out of the Sun's gases." rather than "The Earth is formed out of the Sun's gases." because the Earth has already been formed.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
