We know that a grade AA weighs between 75g and 90g including the shell. A shell weighs between 3g and 5g.

To know the smallest size of egg possible in 12egg omelette, we must use the smallest possible size and the largest possible 5g.

So the twelve egg omelette should have a mass of (75-5)*12 = 70*12 = 840g.

Answer is therefore B.

We have 75 < E + S < 90 and 3 < S < 5 where
E = weight of egg without shell
S = weight of shell

Smallest possible mass of 12 egg omelet = ?

Since Omelet would weigh the least if shell weighs max. i.e. S = 5

Thus, we have 75 < E + 5 < 90
 75-5 < E < 90 – 5
 70 < E < 85

Therefore, possible least mass of 12 egg omelet = 70*12 = 840

Answer(B).

Minimum waight of 12 egg=12*75
=900
12 eggs shell's maximum
weight =12*5
=60
After removing 12 eggs shell's wight= 900-60
=840 smallest weight

Solution

Given

    • A grade AA egg weighs between 75 and 90 grams including the shell.
    • Shells of grade AA eggs weigh between 3 and 5 grams.

To find
    • Smallest possible mass, in grams, of a 12-egg omelette if all grade AA eggs are used.

Approach

To get the smallest possible mass of the omelette, all the eggs should be of the smallest weight possible.
To make an omelette, the shell of an egg is removed. Then possible weight of the egg excluding the shell can be:
    • 75-3 = 72 grams
    • 75-5= 70 grams
    • 90 – 3 = 87 grams
    • 90-5 = 85 grams

The smallest weight of an egg grade AA egg is 70 grams.
Hence, the weight of 12 egg omelette = 12 * 70 = 840 grams.

Hence, the correct answer is option B.

To be considered grade AA, an egg must weigh between 75 and 90 grams, including the shell. Shells of grade AA eggs weigh between 3 and 5 grams. What is the smallest possible mass, in grams, of a 12-egg omelet, assuming that only grade AA eggs are used, the shells are all discarded, and no mass is lost in the cooking process?

A. 800
B. 840
C. 864
D. 900
E. 1,080

Given:
1. To be considered grade AA, an egg must weigh between 75 and 90 grams, including the shell.
2. Shells of grade AA eggs weigh between 3 and 5 grams.

Asked: What is the smallest possible mass, in grams, of a 12-egg omelet, assuming that only grade AA eggs are used, the shells are all discarded, and no mass is lost in the cooking process?

A. 800
B. 840
C. 864
D. 900
E. 1,080

Since shells are discarded, the smallest mass of 1-egg minus shell = 75 - 5 = 70 grams
Smallest possible mass of 12-egg omelet = 12 * 70 = 840 grams

Re: To be considered grade AA, an egg must weigh between 75 and 90 grams [#permalink]
eggs weight range 75-90
eggs shell weight range 3-5

total eggs weight for 12 eggs with shell 900-1080
total eggs shell weight for 12 eggs with shell is 36-60

for the least possible weight only possibility is 900-60 = 840

IMO B is the answer.
Because for smallest possible omelet without shell, the shell has to be heaviest i.e. 5gms. Hence egg will be of 70gms.
12x70=840gms.

12 eggs. You need minimum mass. Consider each to weigh 75g and consider each to have a shell of 5g to have the least possible value of 70g mass for each of the egg.
12*70 is 840g.

75<weight of egg<90
3<weight of shell<5
Max (weight of egg-weight of shell)=87
Min (weight of egg-weight of shell)=70

so min weight of 12 eggs=70*12=840

Here's what I got:

12 * 75 = 900

3 * 12 = 36

900 - 36 = 864

Since the smallest mass of an egg without the shell is 75 - 5 = 70 grams, the smallest possible mass of a 12-egg omelet is 12 x 70 = 840 grams.
