I think it is C.
One of the substances means we are dealing with singular subject hence tells.
The “andâ€

that refers to "substances", which is plural.

Explainations Plz.
Fixed between A and D; singular or plural. Choose D.
B/ E - wordy and awkward
C - not parallel
A - One ==> tells; subject verb agreement.

No, that's not right. The sentence actually says:
...the substance [that they found] is one of those that tell individual genes ...
so "that" clearly refers to "substances", hence it is plural so
"tell" and not "tells" should be used

There is absolutely no indication to tell that the sentence says one of those substances.... Thus i stick to D
What is the OA?

it should be A. deowl has given a clear analysis of what "that" refers to.
that here is plural and need plural verb.

I also went with D but now if 'that' refers to 'substances' then A should be the right option.
However, I do not find it very clear that 'that' is modifying 'substances'.
How do I rephrase the same sentence if I want to modify 'one of the substances' ??

Brajesh

Wow, confusing one. I think it is A, because that refers to a plural antecedent. Had it been singular, the author would have used 'which' .But am SO sure I would have marked D on the test!!!!!

OA is indeed A.
Also both should be accompanied with "and" not "or"

Late, but (A). The singular/parallel construction is tricky, so I used the idiom both X and Y to narrow the choices down to A.

In C & D Tells incorrectly modifies One In E it does not seem idiomatic and E seems a bit awkward In B they does not follow A is the r8 answer!!
