It was useful for me and I want to pay it forward ... Karma

I was interviewed this week. The interview is more a conversation than anything else, very friendly in general!

Basically I had to tell a story of my resume while the interviewer was asking very simple questions. Why did you chose that job? why you moved to another industry? how doing this and that improved the sales by xx%?
-Define my leadership style and how I have been applying it
-Short and long term goals
-They never asked me why emory or what about Atlanta because throughout my answers I was mentioning key aspects
- Extracurriculars - The person read the bullet point I had there and asked me to expand a bit more

Really nothing to matter even if its your first interview. The only thing I will highly recommend is to read again your resume point by point and ask to yourself the basic questions: how, why, what. You should be able to tell a short and good story of every point, specially the most recent experience.

Good luck to everyone!!!!!

DMNY,

Since you are applying Rd 2 through the CGSM, your application will fall into Round 3 for Emory. Emory's regular deadline for Round 3 is Jan 18, so by submitting it to CGSM by Jan. 5 (i think that's the Consortium deadline, not Jan. 3rd.) they will receive it in time for processing in Round 3.

I applied through the Consortium in Round 1, so maybe we can both grab the fellowship and attend.

Hey all,

Hope people are aware of Super Saturday happening on December 1st. You can register in person or for the webcast here: https://goizueta.emory.edu/degree/fulltimemba/admissions/visit.html
Just go under On-Campus events.

And if you can't make it to this one, there'll be another one on Jan 12th.

Hope to see a good turnout.

Just had my interview during Super Saturday. Quite alot of people attended this event. Alot from Atlanta and New York area. Just posting some of the questions I was asked during my interview in hopes that other interviewees will find it useful.

(NO specific order)
Walk through your resume in about 4-5 minutes (with questions here and there)
Why Emory?
Tell me about a challenge you faced, what did you learn?
Tell me about a team experience.
-What are your plans post MBA (LT and ST)
-tell me about a time you received harsh feedback,
Tell me about a recent article you read that interested you and why.
Which clubs would interest you?
Why not just look for your ideal position in banking instead of attending bschool since you are staying in same industry?
Q’s for interviewer? (left about 15 minutes in the end to ask various questions)

One curve ball was that I was interviewed by two people instead of one. An alumnus and a current student. Was kind of intimidating at first but they were very friendly and also shared their insight on the program throughout my responses so that helped. I want to assume that the student was shadowing the alumnus since there were multiple interviews occurring and some candidates had only one interviewer while others had two.

Are there any round one admits who are having trouble with OPUS? More specifically, the acceptance and honor code agreement still appears on the to-do list even after completing it (multiple times) on the admitted students website.

For round two folks - I wouldn't worry too much about the OPUS/website stuff. From what I experienced in round one, the admissions team is on top of their game in contacting applicants if something is missing or if they need for you to clarify anything.

Hi jonhall,

I have one question for you. What was your reason for choosing GBS.

Posted from my mobile device

hselika,

Great question. I have two very specific reasons for choosing GBS - the small community and the GMSC program:

-Small School Community + Big School Recruiting: I have grown up in small educational communities and knew I wanted a more intimate learning environment in which I would be challenged, but also have the support of both my classmates and professors. GBS does not have a cut-throat mentality among students. Professors are constantly available and will even open their professional networks to students if they see a proper fit. However, one of the big knocks on smaller schools (<300 per class) is that they cannot entice a large network of companies to visit campus for recruiting; this certainly is not the case for GBS. One quick look at our top hiring companies - Deloitte, Accenture, Bank of America - indicates that quality of candidates being put out by GBS far outweighs our smaller program. Even outside of our top hiring companies, it is easy to see that the majority of on-campus recruiting is dominated by traditional MBA-hiring companies - 3M, AT&T, Bain, McKinsey, BCG, Georgia-Pacific, RJ Reynolds, Delta Air Lines, to name a few.

-Goizueta Marketing Strategy Consultancy (GMSC): Given my marketing background and interest in Marketing Strategy, the GMSC program is what initially drew me to GBS. This is a very intensive marketing strategy class that places teams of 6 MBA students as real-world marketing consultants working on real-time projects for a client. This is not a class designed to demonstrated GBS's "Experiential Learning" as some similar programs are at other schools - you and your teammates are genuinely consultants on a project for a paying client with a budget that you must consider. Previous clients include Coca-Cola, The Weather Channel, Delta Air Lines, Carnival Cruise Lines, Mohawk Industries, Wellpoint, UCB Pharma, Solvay, among many others. The program was a great preparation for my marketing strategy internship at a major multinational, and I give a great deal of credit to my learnings in GMSC in helping me transition that internship into a full-time offer.

Please let me know what other questions you have. I have truly enjoyed my experience at GBS and am very sad to be leaving the great city of Atlanta in August.

Best,
Jon

Hi Jon, thanks for doing this. For me, the intimate learning environment at Goizueta is an attractive factor. That said, what in your opinion are the possible downsides of a small class? Does a small class size translate to a small network?

Prudence,

This is a great question. I believe this boils down to a question of quality vs. quantity - the GBS alumni network, though formidable, will never be as large as that of larger schools. However, because of the small community at GBS there exists a tremendous bond between alumni and current students. I actually just grabbed coffee with a recent alum, who made time for me at 7:45AM before heading into work for the day, where we discussed the benefits of the GBS network and how those three letters will always get you a conversation with someone anywhere in the world. I have never run into a situation where a GBS alum was not willing to meet with me, whether in Atlanta, New York or Minneapolis - the bond is a very strong one and a big benefit of the small community here.

Any more interview experiences?

I have mine in less than 3 hours (10pm IST). Will post my experience tomorrow (my time, I'm in India).

Hope your interview went well. Can you share the questions?

My interview went quite well. Very friendly interviewer and fortunately the web conferencing software worked without a glitch.

Simple straightforward questions.

It was a 30-35 min interview. Another lady who does interviews for the evening program was observing how to do interviews via video.

Why engineering?
What was your favourite subject in engineering? (I answered with Math & Probability and she was very surprised)
When did you decide to go into marketing?
How did you get your job at Operation Smile? (It was my first job out of college, a non-profit)
Tell me a little about the wine industry in India (I now work for a wine company)
Why did you switch? Why do you think you were chosen for both of your positions? (I mentioned my unique skill set of analytical thinking, graphic design, also threw in a little about how I used my design skills to start my e-commerce venture https://www.laptopskinvault.com)
What do you do in the little spare time you have left over in the day?
Why the Two year program at Goizueta & not the one year?
What attracted you to the Goizueta program?
How will you be able to adjust back to school life after a 3 year gap?
What are your Short Term goals? Do you plan to work in India or US on graduation?
Name some companies you would look for a job at on graduation? (Threw me off a bit since I haven't thought of any specific company for this but I managed since I did know Mindshare which specialises in Branding)
Would you be ok with Brand Management at a consumer goods company? (I said yes because I plan to consult on Branding in retail in the future)
Do you have any questions about Goizueta for me?

And that was about it.

Hope this helps the others who've still to interview.

Cheers & Best of Luck.

Hi,
Since i am from utilities background,i would like to know if Emory has any energy clubs that are directed towards dealing with challenges that we are facing when it comes to saving energy.
Also,i would like to know about 'Goizueta Marketing Strategy Consultancy'.When do full time MBA students join it?

Thanks,
Shreeraj

Sheeraj,

Thanks for your question. The GBS Energy Markets Club (EMC) is a very active club on campus and actually just announced the 2nd Annual EMC Goizueta Energy Symposium (please see attached). This year's Symposium will focus on myriad issues with the Oil, Gas and Electricity industries with thought/industry leaders serving on panels, speaking and interacting with students. Please feel free to message me if would like to be connected directly with the President of the EMC.

As for GMSC, the program is filled with mostly 1st year students from the 2Yr Program and a few individuals from the 1Yr Program. Please click this link for more information - https://goizueta.emory.edu/gmsc/. As I mentioned in a previous post, GMSC is one of the main reasons I matriculated to GBS and strongly believe in the program, so much that I am a Team Guide (similar to a TA) for one of this year's team (our client needs recommendations on how to bring a fast food concept to China - very interesting project).

Hope this helps,
Jon

1. After submission of application Opus says initiated for quite a while before it automatically goes away. Unless u receive an email explicitly stating something is missing, don't worry too much.

2. Email delivery failure: I had a similar issue once and later found out that it was because she is being bombarded with emails and her email inbox was full. Give them a call ASAP to finalize the stuff would be my recommendation.

3. International wire transfer: communications is not yet updated with the message as promised on the admitted students website. But if you click on "finance: view account" and then click on "payment options" it shows the international wire transfer details to be used.

Overall opus is badly maintained and hardly updated. I received admissions confirmation on Friday but opus still says "your admission decision is not yet available". So I wouldn't worry too much about opus.

Thanks Fleepie. Will wait a couple of hours before ringing them up.
