Good point, I liked your explanation (+1)

I was trying to pull in my application to rd1 by cutting corners and submit a text essay :)
It looks like I still might not be able to make it.

Funny thing - I was considering the same thing. Work has kept me extremely busy and these essays are proving to be more time consuming than I initially anticipated. Now I can only apply to two schools R1, and the remaining three will be pushed to R2 (including UCLA). It was a tough pill to swallow, because I wanted to show adcoms I was prepared (I've been prepping since Spring for these apps) but I don't feel too bad anymore. There is a ton of opinions of R1 v. R2 benefits, but ultimately it looks like a wash. The only exception being schools that only have 2 rounds (and not 3 or 4) like MIT. Then I hear there's an advantage to applying to R1, since R2 is equivalent to "final" round, which you want to avoid in general.

Now I just have to think of something creative to talk about for my UCLA video -- and also decide how long it should be.

Fellow FEMBA 2011 applicants...

The essays have formatting instructions as follows - "Maximum 1 page, double-spaced, 12 point font".

The "double-spaced" thingy is super bothersome, if I'm understanding it correctly. Does it essentially mean leaving a line blank after each sentence?

Something like this...

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.
<line left blank>
The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog"

Thoughts?

@jamster21 - no, the double spacing is set in your Word processing software. Essentially the line spacing between each line is greater instead of the default single space. You don't add spaces after each sentence, just set it in the page settings.

Thanks thisguy310.

Man, does it mess my essay up! I have to scale my essay back big-time, or mess around with margin settings to make my content fit somehow.

This is the first I've seen such formatting instructions, thought B-schools were more hung up about word count?

This is what I am doing with my essays, I am using the double spaced option in MS word. in Paragraph settings, the line spacing can be set to double spacing and that will take care of this. You dont have to have a blank line.

Bump.

I'd like to know as well. It seems UCLA and UC Berkeley don't like sharing this information anywhere on their respective websites. :?
