Good point, I liked your explanation (+1)
I was trying to pull in my application to rd1 by cutting corners and submit a text essay
It looks like I still might not be able to make it.
Funny thing - I was considering the same thing. Work has kept me extremely busy and these essays are proving to be more time consuming than I initially anticipated. Now I can only apply to two schools R1, and the remaining three will be pushed to R2 (including UCLA). It was a tough pill to swallow, because I wanted to show adcoms I was prepared (I've been prepping since Spring for these apps) but I don't feel too bad anymore. There is a ton of opinions of R1 v. R2 benefits, but ultimately it looks like a wash. The only exception being schools that only have 2 rounds (and not 3 or 4) like MIT. Then I hear there's an advantage to applying to R1, since R2 is equivalent to "final" round, which you want to avoid in general.
Now I just have to think of something creative to talk about for my UCLA video -- and also decide how long it should be.
