Does anyone think either not doing a supplemental essay or not doing a video is a tremendous detriment? I feel like 1 minute is too short, and would prefer the audio. But it seems like people are recommending the video because it allows adcom to put a face to the application. Any thoughts?

I don't know if it helps or not. Adcom clearly mentions that this essay is truly optional and does not impact the chances of applicants. No comments on that.

To your question on the video, if you prefer an audio, you could just put a recent professional photograph as the video in window live movie maker and that will put a face to the application :) Just a thought.

In an effort to get my application in by R1, I opted for the audio instead of video. If you have the time/energy, I think video is more fun and will show off some of your creativity (if you're good at editing, using Final Cut Pro etc.). Having said that, I did two versions... one with some "slides" to go along with my audio, and I got feedback saying that people preferred the pure audio version. I overlayed some sound effects and it helped conjure a few mental images (similar to a children's audio book).

I would definitely opt for "something" over nothing. Even a text essay is better than not submitting Essay #3.

In for Round 1. That 1 minute optional video response did take a lot of setup and work - shooting, editing and all the little nice touches.
