Nutritionist: In order to lose weight you should stop drinking sweetened beverages such as soda and fruit juices.
Instead, drink only low-calorie and calorie-free beverages, such as water and tea, and consume more fruit instead.
Even if the fruit consumed has calories equal to those in the omitted beverages, you will still consume fewer calories overall and lose weight.

Which of the following is the best explanation as to why the nutritionist’s plan will result in weight loss?

A) A well-balanced diet includes a variety of whole-grains and vegetables in addition to fruit............this argument is just about reducing beverages and opting for fruits. Balanced diet is too generalized. OFS

B) Fruits vary in their content of vitamins and minerals, so a variety of different fruits is preferable........varieties of fruits is out of scope.

C) Some people consume nearly half their daily calories in the form of sugared beverages...........we cannot explain based on some people habits to everyone. Also beverage replacement with fruits is not discussed.

D)The human body evolved in a natural environment that did not include sugary beverages so consuming sugary beverages, even in large quantities, does not satisfy hunger like fruit does.........seems to bit different but better than other options and agrees with the argument.

E)Both fruits and sugary beverages are primarily fat free because nearly all their calories come from carbohydrates..........sugary or sweet beverages are not mentioned fat free infact opposite. Fat is not mentioned in argument. OFS

Official Veritasprep answer:

This is a strengthen-the-plan question. The correct answer will show that the plan will likely achieve the goal. In this case the plan is to drink only low or no-calorie beverages and the goal is to lose weight.

Choices A, B and E state general facts, but do not indicate that this plan will succeed.

Choice C is interesting. If some people do consume so many calories worth of sugared beverages that would indicate that there is a least a possibility that cutting out these calories would result in weight loss. However, it is not known if the people who drink so many sugary drinks need to lose weight, or if when those calories are taken away if the person will need to replace them.

Choice D is the correct answer because it provides a reason why the plan would succeed. Since the human body does not recognize beverages as having calories those liquids do not contribute a feeling of fullness that would signal a person to stop eating.

The answer is D

A and B are irrelevant to the argument
C is tricky as we are told that people consume half their calories by having beverages.
But we are not told anything other than this .
This can have effects such as they can reduce weight or may not be able to do so because of the hight proration of their diet
This option does not tell us anything about the conclusion.
D is correct
E Again some more information but it is not relevant to the argument
