Application Deadlines - Fall 2014 Entry
Please note: The online application form for fall 2014 admission is not yet ready. We expect to launch the application no later than early September. Please do not sumbit a fall 2013 application form if you wish to be considered for fall 2014 admission.

Round 1: November 5, 2013 (international applicants) and November 20, 2013 (domestic applicants)

Round 1 applicants receive priority consideration for merit scholarships. The admissions committee expects to notify all Round 1 applicants of their admission decision by December 20.

Round 2: January 5, 2014 (international applicants) and January 20, 2014 (domestic applicants)

Round 2 applicants are automatically considered for all available merit scholarships, just as Round 1 candidates are. We strongly recommend that all international applicants apply by the Round 2 deadline. Students applying for the Cox Distinguished MBA Scholars program must apply no later than Round 2. The admissions committee expects to notify all Round 2 applicants of their admission decision by March 1.

Round 3: March 5, 2014 (all applicants) -- final deadline for merit scholarship consideration

Round 3 is the final application deadline for international applicants. Students who wish to be considered for the Marketing Scholars or ITOM Scholars programs must also apply no later than Round 3. The admissions committee expects to notify all Round 3 applicants of their admission decision by April 20.

Round 4: May 5, 2014 (domestic applicants)

Round 4 is the final application deadline for domestic applicants. Applications received after May 5 will be considered only if space remains available in the incoming Full-Time MBA class. Round 4 applicants are not eligible for scholarship consideration. The admissions committee expects to notify all Round 4 applicants of their admission decision by June 10.

Hi All,

I am planning to apply to SMU Cox before the first round deadline - Nov 5.

I am in the process of filling up my application form. Do any of you have any specific tips for the essays?

My two cents on the first essay:

What has led you to pursue a graduate business degree? Please identify your short and long-term career objectives, an explanation of your decision to pursue this degree at this point in your life and your specific interest in the Cox School of Business. (500 word limit).


This is a fairly standard goals essay, however, it is really short. My thoughts are that you should answer the why mba, ST and LT goals, why MBA now questions in the first 300 words, and really heavily emphasize the Cox School of Business and why it is the perfect place for you. That should be pretty easy, the campus is beautiful, teaching quality is top notch, the students are sharp, and they have an impressive global focus.

The Cox School of Business seeks students who desire to become leaders with purpose - those who will positively influence the global business community, whether in a small way or on a large scale. What have you done thus far in your career to make a difference? (500 word limit)


This is where you can really highlight your experience and your contributions to your previous company(ies). It is especially relevant if you have non-profit or volunteer experience as this will demonstrate to them that you are someone who sees a greater purpose in your daily work than the accumulation of wealth.

@lahai1dj - Thanks a lot for your response. I was thinking on the same lines too. I started drafting the essays yesterday.

I have another doubt regarding proof of funding document. Some universities ask us to provide a bank statement showing a balance which will suffice atleast for the first year's expenses. Is it required for the SMU Cox. And also, is it required at the time of applying?
