How does traveling to Durham for interviews and events play a role in the decision process? Some have traveled from west coast, India, Europe, etc. Does it show intent or maybe give a little advantage? Your thoughts please!

It does certainly shows your commitment to the program, plus it gives you a chance to experience the school firsthand . It all depends if you have $2000 to shell out just to visit the school or maybe interview. (Considering you are travelling from India).

Absolutely. Duke is one of those schools that wants you to show the love -- if you can make it to Durham, you should definitely try. I have a friend from the Northeast who applied a few years ago and was invited to interview in Durham, but settled for a skype interview. He got waitlisted and when he got feedback they said that he should have come down in person.

If you are across the continent or half-way around the world, then it's understandable if you can't make the trip. But if you do move heaven and earth to get to Durham, will be a big pull for you.

Can any one tell me If I am not reachable on mobile, will they mail me that I am admitted or will they update the status at the applicant portal ?

They call everyone. I was little concerned that I might not be reachable through mobile given that I am someone who leaves it on silent mode for hours (I don't even know why I am doing that) so I chose email as a preferred way of communication. Regardless of what applicants chose, they decided to call everyone personally.

They will still reach for you if you were unreachable on phone. They wouldn't pull back the offer because you didn't answer the phone. Anyway, be little more careful of your phone battery life I guess :-D

It does show committment and give advantage. But even more importantly, you need to interact and say something nice and memorable. It surely is a lot more advantageous if you can manage to make adcoms remember you when they read your application.

I read earlier that calls are usually on the decision date. They haven't been early for a few years now. Although those in round 1 got the interview invite a day or two early. So who really knows...

On the websites, they say calls will start at midnight time but for the EA round I think calls started going out at around 8:00 am (8:30 is the start of Fuqua's official working hours). They usually start by calling applicants in the far east, I guess to catch them up before they go to sleep. 8:00 am in north carolina is already around 7:00 pm Seoul time.

I am not sure how things will go this round, but I doubt they will start calling people before the said date. The first guy to ever talk out about receiving a call in this thread was an Indian guy that got it at 8:00 am (Go back to page 19 for more goosebumps)

I traveled from India for my interview and it was worth it. It definitely leaves an impression and the interviewer starts out knowing your intent to join, else you wouldn't have flown across the world. It cost a bomb, I agree, but compare it to the $120K investment in the MBA and it is paltry. Moreover, I loved the school. Nothing beats person-to-person interaction and I think that showed up in my essays as well.
