Re: A result of the recent election is realizing that in this increasingly [#permalink]

A)realizing that in this increasingly urban area, there is now more worry about crime
B)the realization that in this increasingly urban area, they now worry more about crime
C)the realization that in this increasingly urban area, voters now worry more about crime
D)a realizing that in this increasingly urban area, there is now more concern about crime
E)the realization that in this increasingly urban area, concerns about crime are greater

Can someone plz explain the problem with E.

Should be - the realization - Hence, A, D are out
B - They is ambiguous - we dont know what they is referring to
E - Concerns - cannot be greater

We are left with C

Hence, Answer is C

another reason why

e is wrong because

concerns can not be greater.

Option is E is incorrect for two reasons:-

1) Let's have a look at this sentence -
Concerns about crime are greater than health care.
Two entities that are compared are -
a) Concerns about crime
b) Health care (and not CONCERNS ABOUT HEALTH CARE)
How can one compare two items that do not convey any LOGICAL meaning.

2) THAN is used in non- underlined portion, So MORE must be used in underlined portion.

I think that the difference between B and E is of active and passive; Active is preferred over passive, so B is the right option.

KAPLAN OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

First of all, realizing in the original sentence is wrong because it doesn't really describe a result. Instead, the participle defines a process. Even though the phrasing may sound strange, the realization is correct because, as a noun, realization can logically describe a result. Eliminate (A) and (D). (B) introduces its own unique error with the entirely vague they. Since we don't know what they refers to, the pronoun is incorrect. (C) and (E) remain. (E) sounds fine when read on its own, but if you read it into the sentence you'll see the problem: concerns about crime are greater than [those about] health care. Without those about, the sentence misuses ellipsis. (C) it is.

we need a noun and so realization is correct. eliminate A and D.
Out of B,C and E, only C has the noun voters who are worried. so C is the correct choice.

A result of the recent election is realizing that in this increasingly urban area, there is now more worry about crime than health care.

A) realizing that in this increasingly urban area, there is now more worry about crime
B) the realization that in this increasingly urban area, they now worry more about crime
C) the realization that in this increasingly urban area, voters now worry more about crime
D) a realizing that in this increasingly urban area, there is now more concern about crime
E) the realization that in this increasingly urban area, concerns about crime are greater

Hi folks, it would be great if you address my confusion about the correct option:

The sentence does not specify whether it's talking about voters, politicians or any other subject. By adding the word "Voters" aren't we completely changing/refocusing the meaning of this question?

In that sense, doesn't option E provide a way to bypass that? While I agree with the offical Kaplan explaination of why E isn't the correct option, it seems better than option C to me.

In other Sentence Correction questions, we do look out for additions to sentences that add new meaning or change the meaning and they are almost always marked as an inccorect option.

Hello Manav2656,

We hope this finds you well.

Having gone through the question and your query, we believe we can resolve your doubt.

The important thing to keep in mind here is that on the GMAT you must look for the best among the given answer choices, not a perfect answer choice.

The error in Option C is arguably milder than the one in Option E, as we can reasonably assume that in the context of an election, it is the concern of "voters" that is being referred to.

We hope this helps.
All the best!
