Re: Between 1951 and 1963, it was illegal in the country of Geronia to man [#permalink]
Bunuel wrote:
Between 1951 and 1963, it was illegal in the country of Geronia to manufacture, sell, or transport any alcoholic beverages. Despite this prohibition, however, the death rate from diseases related to excessive alcohol consumption was higher during the first five years of the period than it was during the five years prior to 1951. Therefore, the attempt to prevent alcohol use merely make people want and use alcohol more than they would have if it had not been forbidden.

Each of the following, if true, weakens the argument EXCEPT:

(A) Death from an alcohol-related disease generally does not occur until five to ten years after the onset of excessive alcohol consumption.

(B) The diseases that can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption can also be caused by other kinds of behavior that increased between 1951 and 1963.

(C) The death rate resulting from alcohol-related diseases increased just as sharply during the ten years before and the ten years after the prohibition of alcohol as it did during the years of prohibition.

(D) Many who died of alcohol-related diseases between 1951 and 1963 consumed illegally imported alcoholic beverages produced by the same methods as those used within Geronia.

(E) Between 1951 and 1963, among the people with preexisting alcohol-related diseases, the percentage who obtained lifesaving medical attention declined because of a social stigma attached to excessive alcohol consumption.

D or E
E is out because its saying more peope died because of the lack of healthcare treatment as opposed to people drinking a lot more

Premise 1: 1951-1963: illegal to produce alcohol.
Premise 2: 1st 5 year of this period, people die due to alcohol is higher than the 5 years before the period

Conclusion: Prohibition make people want and use more alcohol than if without prohibition

Each of the following, if true, weakens the argument EXCEPT:
Should find an argument that is either irrelevant or strengthen the argument

(A) Death from an alcohol-related disease generally does not occur until five to ten years after the onset of excessive alcohol consumption.
This is another way to explain the gap of alcoholic death between 5 years after and 5 years before the period --> weaken the connection btw premise and conclusion

(B) The diseases that can be caused by excessive alcohol consumption can also be caused by other kinds of behavior that increased between 1951 and 1963.
Similar to (A). Another way to explain the paradox --> weaken the argument

(C) The death rate resulting from alcohol-related diseases increased just as sharply during the ten years before and the ten years after the prohibition of alcohol as it did during the years of prohibition.
We don't care about how fast the alcohol-related death increases

(D) Many who died of alcohol-related diseases between 1951 and 1963 consumed illegally imported alcoholic beverages produced by the same methods as those used within Geronia.
Oh, it means that even under prohibition, people still consume alcohol imported illegally --> prohibition does nothing or even makes things worse

(E) Between 1951 and 1963, among the people with preexisting alcohol-related diseases, the percentage who obtained lifesaving medical attention declined because of a social stigma attached to excessive alcohol consumption.
Why should we care about social stigma toward alcoholics
