E
To maintain parallelism A,B and C is wrong. Between D & E, its E.

A
B,C,E has no clear reference for "they"
D sounds awkward.

BCE , "they" dont have a clear precedent.
Between D and A, though both looks sloppy , would vote for A .

I don't see anything wrong with A.
BCD- all change the meaning from a definite occurance to a possible occurance. use of may, might, and could signal this.
EBC: all have problems with the pronoun "they." its ambigious.

Agree with A.
There appear to be reference issues in the other choices

I'll go with D. For the building of sounds unidiomatic. Though D too is not the best of choices but still it appears the lesser of all evils.

I will have to go with "A".
B. "That they might build" is wrong -- might implies uncertainty.
C. So as they _might_, see above
D. Such that implies providing an "example of", not that same as "in order to"
E. It is unclear who "they" refers to in all of these choices. They may mean stones, and stones building themselves is weird, although very progressive.
A is good as is.

It is between A and D, the "they" in B,C,E doesn't have a clear reference.
I am going with A, even thought I don't have a good reason to eliminate D...waiting for OA and OE....

A the other choices has illogical reasoning and pronoun ambiguity
