\(290 = \frac{5}{9} * (k-32)\)

\(k = 290*\frac{9}{5} + 32\)

k = 58*9 + 32

Answer would be ending with 4; only option D = 554 fits in

Answer = D

Can someone please explain the algebra that the previous poster used. How did they jump from the 1st equation to the 2nd?

Sure, look below:

Given: T = 5/9 * (K - 32) ----> Multiply both sides by 9/5, we get ----> 9/5T = (5/9 * 9/5) * (K-32)

----> 9/5 * T = 1 * (K-32) ----> (9/5 )T = K -32 (as x*1 = x) ----> Now add 32 to both sides (to transfer 32 from K-32 towards T), we get ----> (9/5)T + 32 = K

Now susbtitute T = 290 in the last equation, we get

(9/5) * 290 + 32 = K ----> K = 9 *58 + 32 = 522 + 32 = 544.

Ah they multiplied by the reciprocal, I misunderstood that.

Thanks

Just want to remind everyone to use estimation for problems such as this one. You will multiply 290 by something slightly less than 2 and then add 32. We know it is a whole number and greater than 500, only D is that...

Very good point. What's your strategy upon seeing a question such as that and deciding which tactic to use?

Honestly, it is something that you should be looking at most of the time. This is a thinking exam, not at math exam.

True, but if you do attempt to answer a question without doing math then there's a higher risk of getting muddled or making careless errors. There's obviously a balancing act and it'd be preferable to have some sort of guidelines to apply in choosing how to tackle a problem

(E) 2,898/5

We start by substituting 290 for T and we obtain:

290 = 5/9(K – 32)

To eliminate the fraction, we multiply the entire equation by 9 and we have:

290 x 9 = 5(K – 32)

We next divide both sides by 5 and then solve for K:

58 x 9 = K – 32

522 = K – 32

554 = K

The answer is D.

290 * 9 = 5k - 160
k = 2610/5
k = 522

290*9 + 160 = 2770, not 2610.

Just to jump in here - how do we exactly know that what we're working with is a whole number?

Thanks!

Given that \(290=\frac{5}{9} * (K - 32)\) --> \(290*\frac{9}{5}=K - 32\) --> \(522=K-32\) --> \(K=554\).

Answer: D.

hi Bunuel,

i used arithmetic method to solve it, but it took long time.

can you explain based on which rule you you divided both parts by 5/9 ?

i revied all kinds of agebra articles but still encounter such simple gaps :)

T = 5/9 * (K - 32)

T = 290

means 290 = 5/9 * (K - 32)

(290 * 9) / 5 = K - 32

K = 522 + 32

K = 554

Hence (D)

Given:
1. T = 5/9 * (K - 32)
2. T = 290

Asked: K = ?

290 = 5/9 * (K-32)
K - 32 = 290 * 9/5 = 58*9 = 522
K = 32 + 522 = 554

Re: If T = 5/9 * (K - 32), and if T = 290, then K = [#permalink]
That type of question is perfect to practice on time-cutting strategies, the most powerful one being estimation.

We can see that 5/9 is awfully close to 5/10=0.5, and that we aim to multiply it by (k-32) in order to get T=290.

Hence, imagine this: 0.5*x=290, which will make things easier! Just make 290*2=580.

Check for the closest answer to 580, which is 554. Answer D, 30 seconds top! :)
