+1 for E

Dutch economy is being compared to the 'economies of Britain, France and Germany'.... and the other criteria of comparison is the 'unemployment rate' which has remained well below that of the other three.

but I heard "the mouth of the tigers" is acceptable. This case is called "distributive"

Pls explain.

E is correct.

A and C are incorrect. Dutch economy has grown faster than Britain, France and Germany (not their economy).

D is incorrect. The economy of Britain, France, and Germany suggest that these countries have single economy which is compared to Dutch economy.

B is incorrect. It is not parallel. Dutch economy has grown faster and Dutch unemployment rate has remained VS Dutch economy has grown faster and Dutch unemployment rate remaining.

pls, help

in oa E, "rate of three countries" is also illogic.

more over, in E, "and rate" is parallel to the preceding clause, NOT LOGIC

so, D can be better. if we accept D , we accept "the economy of three countries is correct? because "that of" is correct

Hi!
I agree with the solution, E suits best. However i have one doubt. i have seen in many forums people suggesting that we should not compare singular(economy) with plural(economies).
Can we do such comparisons?
Thanks

I didn't chose E because the word "economies" was already mentioned in the beginning of the sentence.

For the last five years the Dutch economy has grown faster than Britain, France, or Germany, with the unemployment rate having remained well below that of the other three countries.

We are comparing economy to economy so A, C ruled out.

A)Britain, France, or Germany, with the unemployment rate having remained
B)have those of Britain, France, or Germany, and the unemployment rate remaining we need a clause after and to maintain parallelism.

C)have Britain, France, and Germany, and the unemployment rate has remained

D)the economy of Britain, France, and Germany, with the unemployment rate that has remained - We are talking about three different economy, not one.
E)the economies of Britain, France, and Germany, and the unemployment rate has remained

Word mentioned is "economy" not "economies"

Even if it is there it would not have been right. We would be needing a proper pronoun to refer back that. Such as "those of"

For the last five years the Dutch economy has grown faster than Britain, France, or Germany, with the unemployment rate having remained well below that of the other three countries.

A)Britain, France, or Germany, with the unemployment rate having remained - comparison issue
B)have those of Britain, France, or Germany, and the unemployment rate remaining - and verb after and for subject rate
C)have Britain, France, and Germany, and the unemployment rate has remained - comparison issue
D)the economy of Britain, France, and Germany, with the unemployment rate that has remained - it suggests that Britain, France, and Germany share one economy
E)the economies of Britain, France, and Germany, and the unemployment rate has remained- Correct

if you say " the economy of Britain" is wrong, do you think "that of other three countries" in the non underlined part is wrong?

I think D is answer.

"that of three countries " in non underlined part shows that " the economy of Britain, France and Germany" is right.

so, why D is wrong. ?

the Dutch economy has grown faster..and..the unemployment rate has remained ...are parallel.

As soon as you read the words "has grown faster THAN," you know that the sentence is making some sort of comparison, so immediately ask, "What exactly is being compared to what?" We know that the first is an "economy;" the second should also be an economy or (as in this case) economies. You can rule out A, B and C very quickly. We're now left with a choice between "economy" and "economies." Clearly, since the sentence refers to the THREE countries Britain France and Germany, we want to chose the plural noun "economies."

The "with the unemployment rate that has remained well below..." bit is incorrect. It means that there is a particular unemployment rate (the one that has remained well below), and that's not the right meaning. We don't want to imply that there are multiple unemployment rates.

Can you please explain what does the term "the economies of X,y and z" mean?

Does it mean that each X , y and z has multiple economies or does it mean that the economy of X, the economy of y and the economy of z ?
