By process of elimination -

decline of X is the correct idiom. decline for X is wrong. This eliminates A, C and E.

In choice B, the comma is followed by which. The 'which' in this modifier (part of the sentence after the comma) modifies the noun preceding the comma - in this case which modifies company. This does not make sense as company does not include the thread and the declining sales. The challenges include the threat and the declining sales. Hence eliminate B.

I would pick D over E. threat of X and decline in sales of Y are parallel.

Initially them and these appeared to be referring to either investors or challenges. but logically the sentence enumerates challenges and challenges cannot be investors. That's when I felt that them possibly cannot be referring to investors.

D is better than E. "them>these", "the threat of & the decline in sales of ~"

I think D and E do not have any verb for the underlined phrase which is required. nonoe of the options look good.. but Catleast A looks gramatically correct..

Lw

The initial option is wordy. We do not need INCLUDING and AMONG.
A,C are out.
B is clearly not correct.
D is better, shorter, and parallel.

Shouldn't among be used to compare 3 items?

among x, y and z.

I only see 2 things in the sentence...

I was confused b/w B and D. In D, we dont have a verb (are) after among them.

Thanks again

OK, I am confused. Isn't D a fragment?among creates a clause and not a modifier, correct? So, where is the main verb?

ok lets analyse this
At the annual stockholders meeting (dependent clause acting as a modifier for independent clause after comma)

investors heard a presentation (main clause with investors as subject and heard as verb)

on the numerous challenges facing the company (phrase connected with conjunction on the, and it describes more about the presentation)
including among them the threat from a rival's multibillion-dollar patent-infringement suit and the declining sales for
(including acting as a verb-ing modifier modifying subject of the main clause "investors" as it modifies the subject/noun in the previous clause. in this "the threat from a rival's multibillion-dollar patent-infringement suit " and "the declining sales for" are two members of the list however "investors" cannot be the subject here but then what is the subject?
may be i understand now that we need "these" to stand as pronoun for presentation, as these 2 parts are items of the presentation. thus E.
but what is the subject in this?

This is not as daunting a question as it appears. The decision point is easy "sales for" is an incorrect idiom. The correct idiom is "sales of"

1) Including among them the threat from a rival’s multibillion-dollar patent-infringement suit and the declining sales for
WRONG :- Incorrect idiom "sales for" is incorrect ; "sale of" is correct idiom

2) Which includes the threat of a rival’s multibillion-dollar patent-infringement suit and the declining sales of
WRONG:- "which" is incorrectly modifying company. "which" should modify challenges

3) Included among these the treat from a rival’s multibillion-dollar patent-infringement suit as well as a decline in sales for
WRONG :- Incorrect idiom "sales for" is incorrect ; "sale of" is correct idiom

4) Among them the treat of a rival’s multibillion-dollar patent-infringement suit and the decline in sales of
CORRECT:- Correct idiom; crisp and concise.

5) Among these the treat from a rival’s multibillion-dollar patent-infringement suit as well as the decline in sales for
WRONG :- Incorrect idiom "sales for" is incorrect ; "sale of" is correct idiom
