My views--

(A) due to the fact that they become burdened with high operating costs than failure--Wordy.due to the fact that not required.WRONG.
(B) due to their becoming burdened with high operating costs than to failing--WRONG for many reasons.
© because they become burdened with high operating costs than that they fail --parallelism error.because and that WRONG.
(D) because they become burdened with high operating costs than because they fail--RIGHT.Correct parallelism.
(E) because of their becoming burdened with high operating costs than because of their--Awkward.

+1 for D.

In the comparison structure "more X than Y", X and Y must be parallel. If "because" is there in element X, it should also be there in element Y.

Following is a simpler example:

I stood first more because the competition was weak than because I worked hard.

X = because the competition was weak
Y = because I worked hard

Supply-side economists theorize that large-capital firms find the need to declare bankruptcy more due to the fact that they become burdened with high operating costs than failure to compete for consumer demand.

(A) due to the fact that they become burdened with high operating costs than failure
- Illogical comparison between "the fact" with "failure"

(B) due to their becoming burdened with high operating costs than to failing
- "their becoming burdened" is not parallel to "failure"

(C) because they become burdened with high operating costs than that they fail
- Missing the word "than" which is needed as we have the word "more" in the sentence

(D) because they become burdened with high operating costs than because they fail
- CORRECT - Parallel structure - "because they become burdened" with "because they fail "

(E) because of their becoming burdened with high operating costs than because of their
- "their becoming burdened" is redundant and unclear

Hence, Answer is D

Why is E wrong here

Hi Sachin, there is an obvious incorrect sentence construct in E:

Supply-side economists theorize that large-capital firms find the need to declare bankruptcy more because of their becoming burdened with high operating costs than because of their to compete for consumer demand.

It is not difficult to figure out that "because of their to compete" is an incorrect sentence construct.

In addition, "possessive + VERBing + direct object" ("their becoming burdened" in this sentence) is not considered a good construct on GMAT.
