Congratulations for 760! Q51 is great! How were the Quant questions at Q51 level compared to Gmat Prep / Gmatclub tests?

Thanks! I don't think there is a very specific answer to this. From a 10k feet in the air view, it would seem that the Gmat prep questions are at a slightly lower level while Gmatclub quizzes/tests are at a slightly higher level. But that is only a function of an even split of 500, 600, and 700 level questions in the former and a denser split of 700 level questions in the latter. If you get more granular, I think the level of questions on the test are pretty comparable to Gmat prep if you solely focus on the 600-700 level questions, especially from the practice question sets and advanced questions (forgot to mention in my original post that I used the OG Advanced questions set too). The first few questions on the test will start out much easier but the difficulty ramps up as you answer the questions. I don't think the difficulty ever gets to the level of the most difficult questions of Gmatclub tests. I would still recommend doing the Gmatclub tests extensively because the questions on the tests are not difficult for the sake of being difficult like you would find with some other prep companies. And training on these harder questions makes you stronger, I think it is analogous to lifting weights i.e. if you practice benching 200lbs then benching 150lbs on competition day becomes a breeze.

Congrats! That’s an amazing score! Can you tell what you did in the 15 odd days after your first attempt to improve so much- schedule you followed?

Posted from my mobile device

Thanks! Honest answer - not a whole lot. I had a number of things going on in my personal life (moving apartments, increased workload, 4th of July holiday, burn out, etc) and as a result I didn't really get a lot of time to study. I think I would have scored higher in my first attempt if I did not mess up on my timing, so I don't attribute the 40 point jump to anything I did in those 15 days, but more on being disciplined on my timing in the actual test on my second attempt.

To strictly answer your question though, I still kept studying for 2-3 hours every weekday and re-did some of my OG GMAT practice tests on the weekends. I also did the OG practice questions set 2 as I had run out of all other material before my first attempt.

A counter intuitive advice in my opinion would be to maybe ease up a little bit. Prior to my first attempt I had pretty much stopped having a life outside of working and studying but in the last month I have started going out to bars , working out, swimming, running, etc. again and I think that allowed me to gain better perspective and relax. Hopefully this helps.

Glad I could inspire!

Forgive me for my lack of humility, but I personally don't believe Q49 was reflective of my ability. If you will see my scores in the mock exams (OG only), I was consistently scoring Q50-51. I think the Q49 was more of a ramification of my time management (or lack of) on the test. Time management was my handicap since day 1 but I had worked extensively on time management in mock tests and had made significant progress. I think either test nerves made me revert back to my flaws or I got complacent when I was 4-5 minutes ahead in the first half of the section and subsequently took my foot off the pedal. In my second attempt, I was very disciplined but still running 2-4 minutes behind for most of the section. I didn't get nervous, just kept my head down because I knew that there will be 2-3 questions that I will be able to solve in 1-1.15 minutes and get back on track. And I was able to in the second attempt but not the first.

I have shared details on my preparation in the original post but if you would like some additional details, then could you point out what you're exactly curious about?

Finally, (GMAT experts, keep me honest here) I believe that luck plays some role between Q50 v/s Q51 since the margins are very fine between the two. There were a couple of topics in Geometry that I was not confident in, no matter how much I prepped. I ended up getting tested on them in my first attempt, but got questions on Geometry topics that I was strong at in my second attempt. It sometimes just comes down to raw dumb luck but you can negate luck as much as possible by preparing as thoroughly as you can!

This past weekend I gave my second and final GMAT attempt. I am glad for this long and arduous journey to have ended, but the prospect of starting with the application process seems daunting enough that I thought of writing about my experience with the GMAT instead (procrastination is truly a hell of a drug). It is ironic that this is the first time I am making a post after having spent so much time on this site that my browser auto-completes to gmatclub instead of Google or Gmail! However, I strongly believe that Gmatclub has been instrumental in helping me reach a high score on the GMAT and as a result I wanted to share my experience in hopes that it might be illuminating for someone else.

....

TL;DR – Work hard and believe in yourself. You will get there if you’re disciplined and diligent. Use the right materials and constantly reassess areas for improvement. GMATclub, GMATNinja, and all OG materials are imperative if you want to get a high score (in my humble opinion). For quant, TTP is a great place to get started and will get you to Q48-49 if you complete it in its entirety. GMATclub tests/quizzes and redoing questions from your error log will get you to Q50-51. For verbal, having strong fundamentals is paramount. I think just GMATNinja videos and OG materials are sufficient if you have your basics covered. Finally, give as many credible mock tests as possible. Simulate exam conditions as much as possible for all mock tests (I wore a mask for each mock test as I knew that I would have to at the exam center). Another critical piece is to have a strong support structure. My girlfriend was a rock by my side the past year and helped me through times when I was demotivated or lost hope. She helped out tremendously so that I didn’t waste any time throughout the day. I would work for 8-12 hours and then study for the rest of the time I was awake. I couldn’t have done that if she didn’t pick up some of my slack around the house. Last of all, be clear headed that at the end of the day GMAT is just a test, and your performance on it does not define you, so don’t beat yourself up too much if you’re not where you would like to be. Just take a deep breath and keep going.

Thanks unraveled! I honestly did not realize until you mentioned it that I ended up giving 21 tests! Also, glad that you enjoyed the debrief. I partially wrote the debrief to get my creative juices to start flowing for my application essays since I have not written anything non-technical in over 5 years. Hence, the chapters and the story format :)

Congratulations on the EPIC score improvement, whoisvek! And thank you so much for the kind words. I'm thrilled that we could help a little bit, and can't wait to see where you land.

You're on! I used to live in Chicago, so once this pandemic thing ends, we're likely to pass through at some point. By then, you might be in school somewhere else, but if you're ever in Denver, let me know.

Congratulations again, and please reach out once you know where you're headed for b-school!

Thanks Charles! As a former tutor myself (albeit Physics, so not as cool), I recognize and appreciate the dedication and passion you have, not only to educate, but also to make a change in your students' lives. Thank you for sharing your content and expertise with this community, you are not only a brilliant educator but also a genuinely amazing person!

Also, I am almost as big of a food lover as you and have been called a human Yelp for Chicago's restaurants more than once (Booth and Kellogg adcoms, does this help my case?!) so you will not be disappointed! I will make sure to reach out once I get into b-school, but for now I'm off to eat some delicious omakase!

More importantly: if you're ever at the French Market in the West Loop, go eat some purple Filipino doughnuts -- https://secretchicago.com/a-taste-of-the-philippines/. The chef used to live in Denver, and catered my wedding. She's one of my favorite chefs, and one of my favorite people. Say hello for me if you ever stop by.

I live just 1.5 blocks away from the French Market and used to eat lunch there very very often prior to the pandemic (Aloha Poke and Demera Ethopian are to die for)! I am totally grabbing some of those purple doughnuts this week and will make sure to say hello to Kathy for you. Thanks for the recommendation!
