Dear All,
Welcome to the 2021 intake thread of UNC Kenan Flager (class of 2023). Let's use this platform to know each-other, exchange ideas, discuss app strategies, and some profile discussions may be
What are the mandatory and optional essay questions? Essay-1 (Mandatory, Word Limit 500): 1. What are your immediate career goals? 2. How will you benefit personally and professionally from earning an MBA at UNC Kenan-Flagler? 3. As the business world continues to evolve, circumstances can change that can guide you in a different direction. Should your goals that you provided above not transpire, what other opportunities would you explore?
Essay-2 (Mandatory, Word Limit 300): 2020 brought many defining experiences, including: a global pandemic, changes to learning and working environments, and calls for social justice and racial equity. At UNC Kenan-Flagler Business School, these experiences propel us to strengthen efforts to increase the diversity in our community, to create a more equitable and inclusive learning environment and to teach our students to manage diversity, equity and inclusion. What have you learned about diversity, equity and inclusion in 2020? Please share your experience and what you learned about yourself as a leader. Tell us how you changed or would like to change your leadership style? If you were not leading a team, tell us what you learned at your level about diversity, equity and inclusion. How do you expect to continue that growth in the MBA program?
Essay-3 (Optional, Word Limit 150): 1. If you have not completed coursework in the core business subjects (calculus, microeconomics, statistics, financial accounting), how will you prepare yourself? 2. What conditions caused you to experience inconsistent academics, gaps in work, or low standardized test scores? 3. How have you chosen your recommenders?
Essay-4 (For Re-applicants Only, Word Limit 100): We require a complete application in addition to a brief essay (100 words or less) that describes how your application differs from your previous submission and that alerts us to new test scores, a recent promotion, or other areas that demonstrate how you have strengthened your candidacy.
Where can I find the brochure to the program? I have attached the brochure that I downloaded back in July with this thread. 'UNC-KF, MBA Brochure (11-07-20)' is the name of the attachment

Can i combine the ‘Business Analytics and Management Science’ concentration with ‘Marketing’concentration? If yes, will I still be eligible for a two-year extension on the initial one-year Optional Practice Training (OPT) period? (STEM-MBA)

I find it weird that there are news articles of STEM designation but the school itself is not actively promoting that fact. Will be interesting to hear from current students or Alumni.

We are writing to share a recent development specific to our Business Analytics and Management Science (BAMS) concentration. In December, the University informed UNC Kenan-Flagler that the concentration as a second major qualified for STEM designation. We recently learned that the UNC System deemed that the second major with a STEM designation had been granted prematurely. We have been working hard since then to get the qualification approved. However, we were recently told that we should not expect approval by the UNC System before January 2021.
This change does not alter the awarding of the BAMS concentration. However, our concentration in Business Analytics and Management Science is not currently approved as a STEM-designated second major and is not eligible for a two-year extension of optional practical training (OPT), which is particularly important to our international students and recent graduates.
We are fully committed to engaging in the approval process in early 2021 with the hope that all UNC Kenan-Flagler students completing this concentration are equipped with the additional STEM designation. We are working closely with University and System stakeholders so that when approved, the designation will apply retroactively. Given that current rules permit application for the STEM-OPT two-year extension up to one year after graduation, our hope is that once approved as a second major, all BAMS MBA graduates from 2020 and 2021, should still be able to qualify for the STEM-OPT extension.
Our commitment to establishing this STEM-designated major is both strong and unchanged. Our concentration in Business Analytics and Management Science continues to be an integral component of our MBA curriculum. We understand you may have questions and concerns, and we will share updates as we receive them.
Sincerely,
Melissa Hlavac, Associate Dean of MBA Programs Brad Staats, Associate Dean of MBA Programs

For those who got invites, what does your application status say? I haven’t gotten an invite but was wondering if the status should change to reviewed or something.
Mine still says submitted.
