A. plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses in the same way that flight simulators do
B. plan difficult operations and develop programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as with flight simulators
C. to plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators
D. plan difficult operations and in developing programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as flight simulators
E. to plan difficult operations and developing programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators do

i pick A. D and E are out for parallelism. C is out because LIKE never used in clause. in B, letting does not modify programs correctly. correct me if i am wrong

A. plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses in the same way that flight simulators do OK
B. plan difficult operations and develop programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as with flight simulators Researchers are using computer images to develop programs, not the surgeons;"as with flight simulators do" is not grammatically correct.
C. to plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators "to help surgeons to plan operations" <> to help surgeons plan.
D. plan difficult operations and in developing programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as flight simulators "in developing" is not parallel with "to help"
E. to plan difficult operations and developing programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators do "developing" is parallel with "to help"; "like" cannot contain a verb

Splits:
to develop vs. develop vs. developing - sentence must be parallel logically and structurally, so infinitive is needed.
like...do vs. like vs. in the same way that - a verb is used or not used depending on the comparative clause indicator.

Check parallelism + meanings [A] is the best answer

Nothing seems to be wrong with that and that as they modifies the preceding noun " programs" and "ways"

A. plan difficult operations and develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses in the same way that flight simulators do

Here, to develop parallel with to help . This conveys the right meaning as the researcher help surgeon and develop program.

B. plan difficult operations and develop programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as with flight simulators

Here, develop parallel with plan > wrong meaning Surgeons do not develop program

C. to plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators
Help + V. Therefore help to plan = wrong
This also conveys ambiguity in the meanings.

D. plan difficult operations and in developing programs to work for doctors and nurses the same way as flight simulators

in developing is not parallel to any verb

E. to plan difficult operations and developing programs that will work for doctors and nurses like flight simulators do

Again, developing is not parallel to any verb.

In this option (C)- to help surgeons to plan difficult operations ..... there can be two parallelism entities

- First - Researchers are using computer images to help surgeons "to plan difficult operations and to develop programs..." - In this case it looks as if surgeons to develop programs - Not correct.

- Second - Researchers are computer images "to help surgeons ..& to develop programs ... "

Hope this helps.

I picked E on this one because I interpreted the meaning of the sentence to be that "researchers are using images to help the surgeons plans operations and are developing programs that will work for doctors/nurses like flight simulators do for pilots......"

why is this an incorrect interpretation of the meaning?

Option E is not only wrong w.r.t meaning interpretation but also wrong technically (w.r.t grammar).

As per the meaning of the sentence - Researchers are using images to do 2 things: 1. to help surgeons ... 2. to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses

This construction is logically and grammatically parallel.

In addition, in option E , "like" is followed by a clause (sentence). "Like" always compares noun/pronoun. Mistake in option E (like flight simulators do)

Hope this helps.

Researchers are the main subject here. They are trying to do 2 things : use computer images and develop programs.
These 2 need to be in parallel. Therefore the correct options should have "to help" and "to develop" .
This leaves us with option A and C.

Action of doctors : planning of difficult operations is not action of Researchers and need not be parallel. Hence to plan is wrong.
Hence OA is A

In the original sentence " plan difficult operations and to develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses in the same way that flight simulators do", the idiom is in the same way that. Shouldn't the idiom be in the same way as?

Both would be OK.

Using "that" introduces a modifier referring to the noun "way". The pronoun "that" is used to replace "the same way". The structure is: Flight simulators work (do) for pilots the same way.
Using "as" introduces a comparison between " that will work for doctors and nurses" and " flight simulators do(work) for pilots".

Both conveys the correct meaning.

I understand why the answer is A but I've a small query. Can someone please shed light on it.

Why can't it be " To help surgeons plan and develop"?
Isn't this what the researchers are ultimately doing? They are helping and how they are helping: by planning and by developing
Please tell me where i am going wrong

Thank You

Hi ashutosh, when you say: ..To help surgeons plan and develop..
- This means that ultimately surgeons are planning and developing <something>; So, here, what you intend to depict is that researchers are using computer images to help surgeons accomplish these two things (plan and develop). But this interpretation is illogical; surgeons are not developing programs that will work for doctors and nurses.

The intended meaning is that computer images are being used (by researchers) to do two things:
i) help surgeons plan difficult operations and
ii) develop programs that will work for doctors and nurses

Hence, help and develop are logically similar parts of the sentence. So, they must be grammatically similar. Since to help is in the non-underlined portion, we can't change it. Using to develop ensures that the sentence does not have the meaning interpretation issue wherein it could be interpreted as if the surgeons are accomplishing these two things.

Reiterating, if we omit the to with develop, the sentence would be: ..to help surgeons plan and develop... The grammatical similarity between plan and develop would convey the meaning that surgeons are doing these two things; not the intended meaning (after all, surgeons are supposed to just plan/perform operations :) ).

p.s. This interplay between grammatical similarity and logical meaning is the crux of parallelism. Our book EducationAisle Sentence Correction Nirvana discusses this concept of parallelism, its application and examples in significant detail. If someone is interested, PM me your email-id, I can mail the corresponding section.

Hi sayantanc2k

Easy A.

However, need to know the acceptable use of the following Idiom for future

Is it

"to help to plan"
or
"to help plan"
or
both acceptable?

is this a split on this question?

Both are acceptable. As per Manhattan SC guide, "help in planning" would be wrong, but "help plan", "help to plan", "help surgeons to plan", " help surgeons plan" all are correct.
