Essay Questions

Essay A:
What matters most to you, and why?

For this essay, we would like you to:
• Do some deep self-examination, so you can genuinely illustrate who you are and how you came to be the person you are.
• Share the insights, experiences, and lessons that shaped your perspectives, rather than focusing merely on what you’ve done or accomplished.
• Write from the heart, and illustrate how a person, situation, or event has influenced you.
• Focus on the “why” rather than the “what.”

Essay B:
Why Stanford?

Enlighten us on how earning your MBA at Stanford will enable you to realize your ambitions.
• Explain your decision to pursue graduate education in management.
• Explain the distinctive opportunities you will pursue at Stanford.
• If you are applying to both the MBA and MSx programs, use Essay B to address your interest in both programs.

Essay Length:
Your answers for both essay questions combined may not exceed 1,150 words (1,200 words if you are applying to both the MBA and MSx programs). Each of you has your own story to tell, so please allocate these words between the essays in the way that is most effective for you. Below is a suggested word count, based on what we typically see.

Essay A: 750 words
Essay B: 400 words
Essay B (if applying to both the MBA and MSx programs): 450 words

Formatting:
•Double-spaced
• Indicate the question you are answering at the beginning of each essay (does not count toward the word limit)
• Number all pages
• Upload one document that includes both essays

Optional Information
If there is any information that is critical for us to know and is not captured elsewhere, include it in the “Additional Information” section of the application. Pertinent examples include:

• Extenuating circumstances affecting academic or work performance
• Work experience that did not fit into the space provided
• Academic experience (e.g., independent research) not noted elsewhere

Essay Analysis and Tips from ACCEPTED

Essay A
This superficially straightforward question has been Stanford’s first for at least the last sixteen years, and it is actually one of the most difficult, if not the most difficult MBA essay questions to answer. Superficial responses will fail. The prompt demands introspection. Before you put finger to keyboard or pen to paper, really reflect on what you value, how you have acted upon those principles, and why you value them. Stanford’s advice urges reflection. The question requires it.

When I reflect on our many successful Stanford clients, initiative in the face of need is the common thread among them. They are always the ones who revealed, especially in Essay A, that they do not turn away when they see a problem or need for action. They grab the initiative when faced with an opportunity to contribute. They are comfortable expressing emotion and their values, and their actions reflect both, but particularly the latter. Think purpose-driven, principle-driven lives and leadership.

More than anything else, initiative and self-awareness characterize the successful Stanford applicant. Implication: You have to know your values and those times you have acted upon them. Yes I wrote that a few seconds ago, but it bears repeating. Climbing Mt. Everest or suffering from terrible social ills is not a requirement of admission, but you do have to know the person occupying your skin.

Essay B
Now that question is succinct, and really says what they want to know.

Similar to questions that have occupied this Stanford application slot for years, this question is a variation of a standard MBA goals question, as revealed in the bullet points after it. For this forward-looking question, you need say why you want an MBA. The best way to do so is in terms of your desired post-MBA professional direction. Then explain how Stanford’s program specifically will help you travel down that path. Note the emphasis in the bullet points about the "distinctive opportunities you will pursue at Stanford." Do your homework. You need to know what are the distinctive characteristics of the Stanford MBA program or you simply can't answer the question.

Understand the flexibility inherent in Stanford’s curriculum, its integrated approach to management, its entrepreneurial culture, and how all these elements (and others) will help you learn what you need to know to achieve your career goals. Realize that the curriculum allows for personalization based on your goal and your past experience, specifically your previous business education. Two pieces of information are required to answer this question: A clear MBA goal and an in-depth understanding of Stanford GSB’s curriculum. (Folks: It’s not just the ranking, brand, or location.)

Optional Info
Respond if you have something to explain or need the additional space because you can’t fit in your work experience or all academic info. Responses should be succinct and to-the-point and should provide the context necessary for Stanford to understand the circumstances surrounding whatever you are writing about.

jole101: glad to see such a unique profile in the forum. Here's mine. Which round BTW?

Graduated in 2011 as an electrical engineering, worked for two years a big engineering firm, as a electrical design engineer, then switched major gears towards education as a Teach for India fellow, where I taught for 2 years. Now I am a program manager at a start up in which I work as a consultant with 20 school leaders on a school transformation project.

Stanford - Admission Trends!

Hi Everyone, Here is our analysis of admission trends and acceptance chances at Stanford based on our accumulated forum data of applicants. We have analysed our forum data of Stanford applicants from 2012 to 2016 to determine acceptance chances by GMAT score, admission rounds, industry, age, country, etc.

The data used for this analysis is self-reported, so it's advised to use findings of this analysis with discretion. They are meant to give only a general idea of admission scenario at Stanford. Don't presume that these findings will hold true all the time.

We would welcome any comments, opinions, suggestions or anything else that you might have to say about the findings of this analysis.

YOY Acceptance Rate and Avg GMAT of Applicants

Sample Size: 2754 Applicants
Image

Acceptance Rate by GMAT Score

  • Stanford GSB is arguably the best business school in the world. The intensity of competition at its flagship two year, full time, MBA program can be clearly seen in the following chart.
  • Admission rate of Stanford is lowest compared to that of other top schools that we analysed so far; Even with 760 GMAT, your chance of acceptance is only 9%.
  • Among the 1383 applicants that we considered for this chart, around 90% had GMAT score of 700 or above and 75% had GMAT score of 720 or above. This finding tells us that those with lower than 700 GMAT need to have strong profile and convincing story for applying to Stanford.
  • Narrow gap between lines showing interview invites and acceptance indicate that Stanford is very careful in selecting candidates for interview' This leads us to infer that one can have better chance of acceptance after interview. This may seem obvious but we have seen certain schools who are very generous in inviting candidates for interview, but selective in making final decisions. (See Tuck, Columbia, Fuqua)
  • When we dug deeper into the data, we found that 41% of interviewed candidates got acceptance from Stanford.

Sample Size: 1383 Applicants
Image

Acceptance Rate by Admission Round

Sample Size: 2753 Applicants

  • This is another interesting observation. Acceptance rate is roughly the same in all admission rounds.
Image

Acceptance Rates of Applicants in Different Age Groups

Sample Size: 1009 Applicants
Image

Acceptance rates of applicants from various industries

  • The first chart - line chart - shows acceptance rates of applicants from various industries and the pie chart next to it shows industry-wise allocation of applicants.

Sample Size: 1199 Applicants

Acceptance Rates of Applicants from Various Regions

Sample Size: 942 Applicants

As I said earlier, we welcome your views, counter-views, suggestions, etc on the analysis. Thank you!
