Which business school is most beloved by MBA students?

From a business school class trip leading to a billion dollar startup to top MBA programs recommended by MBA students, let’s dig into the latest headlines in business education and MBA news. Leave your comments below.

The billion dollar business school field trip

It’s not uncommon for students at top MBA programs to go on class field trips with significant price tags—the Italian Riviera, Cancun, St. Bart’s. What is uncommon, however, is for two MBA students to go on one of these trips and create a billion-dollar company in the process. Six years ago, that’s exactly what Harvard Business School students Matthew Prince and Michelle Zatlyn did. Their five-day immersion trip to Silicon Valley netted them CloudFlare, which provides a content delivery network and distributed domain name server system. CloudFlare now handles five percent of all Internet traffic, with over 500 billion hits every month. Had they decided to go sailing in the Caribbean instead, a good tan may have been all they would have had to show for their experience. (Business Insider)

Top MBA programs—according to MBA students

As part of BusinessWeek’s most recent ranking of the top MBA programs, approximately 10,000 graduating MBA students were asked to rate on a scale of 1 to 5 how strongly they concurred with the following statement: “I would encourage those looking for an MBA to enroll in my MBA program.” Topping the list as the most beloved business education program was Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Students surveyed said they liked the school’s proximity and ties to Silicon Valley, where no doubt many of them want to work after graduating. Placing second was the University of Maryland’s Smith School of Business.  Smith students bragged about the closeness of their tight-knit community and the “no drama” atmosphere. Out and about in business school

According to data provided by Reaching Out MBA, the leading organization for LGBTQ business school students and their allies, about three percent of MBA students openly identify as LGBTQ. What’s it like for a gay student to come out at business school? One student says he was embraced like a family member and never looked back. (Poets & Quants)

Big data pays off for MBAs

Top MBA programs are partnering with leaders in big data—companies that are eager to hire top talent with a background in analytics. These companies, spanning many sectors, want to glean insights from data experts—something that top MBA programs are quickly coming around to understanding. Top firms like IBM, KPMG, and Accenture are investing in business education to make sure graduates are getting their letters with the right skills for the new economy. (BusinessBecause)

Social media do’s and don’ts

Expert say that some social media sites are better than others for aspiring business students to connect with the top MBA programs of their choice. Unlike those from some other graduate-level programs, business education admissions officers are often looking for candidates who not only make good students, but also generous alumni. That means you should highlight your plans post-graduation. (U.S. News & World Report)
