INSEAD’s New Master in Finance Degree

INSEAD has announced the start of its newest program: a Master in Finance degree which officially began April 7,2013. The Master in Finance was created in 2012 with the objective of providing experienced finance industry professionals with skills and knowledge to give them a competitive edge in the dynamic field of finance. Applicants interested in the Master in Finance program should have a minimum of 4 to 6 years of financial experience and are looking to gain both leadership and management experience to bring back to the finance industry. This initiative reflects INSEAD’s goal of preparing leaders globally with expertise to navigate an increasingly complex business world.

A cohort of 33 students hailing from around the world and representing countries such as Korea, South Africa, Germany, India, Australia and the U.S. attended the program for its first term. The program stretches over 20 months and across five modules. The first of the four modules takes place in Singapore – a choice meant to reflect the growing importance that Asia has played in the competing global market and finance industry. The first two modules focus on solidifying student’s basis of finance, accounting and decision sciences. The third module then gives students the opportunity to focus on one of two concentrations: corporate finance or financial markets. Finally, the fourth module consists of an elective course in order to allow students to build a deeper understanding of one additional area of interest, such as investment banking or macroeconomics, among others. The fifth module takes place at the Fontainebleau campus in Europe near Paris, France and serves as a capstone to wrap up and meld all of the learned material. Additionally, each of these modules consists of a significant amount of work based on case studies, grounded in the idea that the best way to learn is to understand how to work out real world situations.

What makes INSEAD’s new Master in Finance program stand out is its intended student audience. Many of the other Master in Finance programs already in existence gather candidates who have little or no real world financial experience. The INSEAD program, however, will appeal to a new segment of people – professionals with a breadth of financial industry experience beneath them already. Classmates and colleagues will be able offer a wealth of knowledge, experience, and advice to enhance the classroom throughout the program.
