Application and Video essay submitted!!

For the video, don't panic, practise a lot in the platform, it is very friendly. Have a few examples about your life and hoobies to use in case you are asked. And if you get a crazy question, be spontaneous and smile a lot!

Good luck to all

Submitted!!!

Ok, question:

I haven't received an e-mail confirmation from the school saying that the application has been 'submitted'. I just checked my application again on the site and it says 'submitted', but I haven't received an email confirmation from the school which is weird because the other schools do it and someone on this thread said he did!!! Does it take some time after you've submitted your application to receive an e-mail from the school confirming the submission for round 1? Or I'm being a paranoid idiot?

You should receive an email confirmation, probably the servers are busy right now. Don't worry about it, just log in and check the status. And I am the king of paranoid city so I can totally relate to your situation :) Good Luck!

FROM Kellogg MBA Blog: MMM course partners with local nonprofit

MMM student Miles Warmington presents his poster to Urban Gateways Marketing Associate Anna Joranger.

By Emily Weinstein

Answer this: What is design to you?

That’s a pretty open-ended question, but that’s Professor Erin Huizenga’s intention when she asks her 60 MMM students the first day of class.

In Communication Design, Huizenga exposes students to the basic elements of graphic design and visual narrative. Students experiment with grids, typography, color theory, Gestalt principles and visual framework. Huizenga stresses the importance of knowing the fundamentals first.

“You have to learn the rules of the road, then you can play with them and make them your own,” Huizenga said.

The course focuses on design as a craft by learning hard skills on Adobe Creative Suite, but Huizenga also encourages students to take their design a level further by thinking about visual hierarchy.

“This class is super refreshing, because it forces you to think differently,” MMM student Salman Somjee said.

During the course, the class partners with a local nonprofit for whom they design posters. This summer students worked with Urban Gateways, a nonprofit that educates Chicago’s youth through high-quality, accessible arts experiences.

“I always try to have a partner organization so that the students feel they have a really nice goal before them and a really good reason to work hard for the sake of the client,” Huizenga said

Huizenga finds the clients through EPIC, a nonprofit she founded six years ago that brings creative professionals together to work for eight weeks with low-budget nonprofits. She says partnering with local organizations is an added bonus for the students.

“It’s fun to share the nonprofit love with students from all over the world who come to MMM,” Huizenga said, “They might not know Chicago well and it’s a really neat way to introduce them to the city.”

The class culminates with poster presentations to the client. Student explain his or her poster, the design principles used and their creative process. All posters are loaded onto a thumb drive and are given to the client to use.

Urban Gateways has already featured several students’ posters on its social media channels.

Emily Weinstein is the Communications Coordinator at the Segal Design Institute. Emily completed Teach for America (TFA) in the Chicagoland region. Following TFA she earned her Master of Science in journalism from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, Media, Integrated Marketing Communications.

In - video essays this weekend. I struggled more than I thought I would with Yale's so will be spending more time practicing.

My recommender (supervisor) forgot to send in my Kellogg rec. this weekend and had an emergency today, so I'll see if they accept it tomorrow morning...

Congrats to all who submitted R1! I am in as well.

Nervous about the video essay and have a quick question. Is the first question definitely an ice-breaker/ personal/ creative question? Or is there any chance it will be behavioral ("tell me about a time when you influenced an opinion..."). Thanks!
