Hi GMAT experts,
I am prepping to take the GMAT at the end of May/2017 (~8 months). Last week I took the first GMATPrep CAT; 600 (Q39, V34, IR8, no AWA). I used this CAT essentially as a diagnostic. I hadn't really studied, and only went through the
MGMAT foundations of math book to re-familiarize myself with this kind of math; if this was a calculus test or diffy-q's test I'd probably do better!
From going through the questions after the test I have identified the following:
1) Lots of work to do in quant. For all of the questions I got wrong in the CAT I took snapshots and complied a problem set to work through. I was eventually able to answer all of these questions correctly, but most took 3-5mins before the a-ha! moment. Some were just dumb mistakes. There's a pretty good spread in these wrong answers in terms of content areas. Also, roughly similar percent wrong when analyzing PS vs DS.
2) Sentence correction was pathetic. RC and CR percent-correct was much higher than SC. Can someone comment on whether the algorithm adjusts verbal difficulty as a whole, or if SC/CR/RC move independently of each other? Either way, SC is weak. I am a native English speaker, albeit not a very elegant one
My target score is, you guessed it, 700.
I have the following materials:
1)
MGMAT Sets, including foundations
2)
Magoosh premium subscription
3)
MGMAT CATs
4)
OG 2017, of course, with Quant/Verbal review
I will be getting the additional GMATPrep CATs for later on.
If I still suck at SC in 3 months I'll start looking at e-GMATs SC course. We shall see.
I have attached a spreadsheet of my proposed study schedule for the first 3 months of prep, leading up to the first
MGMAT CAT. I'm not going to fill in the next 5 months of study until I have an idea of my real weak spots after beginning real prep. Needless to say, the back-end study will be much more CAT-heavy. Please take a look and give me you opinions.
The spreadsheet seems vague, but what I intend to do is make detailed notes from
MGMAT with added notes from
Magoosh (or even vice versa, depending on what clicks for that subject). Number properties was the weakest quant area for me, only by a bit, but still, I moved NP nearest to the CAT date and added an extra week. SC is going to be the big verbal focus for the next CAT, one week per chapter in
MGMAT, no less. I will create more problem sets of
OG problems that I struggle with and dedicate time to those sets once every ~3 weeks as my only
OG homework for that week. All GMAC questions will be answered with a timer.
Thanks in advance for your consideration!
