(1) x = 30 - y
Since we don't know the value of y, we cannot determine whether x>0.

(2) y<-3.166 or y>3.166
Since we don't know the value of x, we cannot determine whether x>0.

(1) x + y = 30
We do not know the value of either X or Y, hence Insufficient because both X > 0 and X < 0 are possible.

(2) \(y^2 >10\)
This is insufficient as we do not know what is X.

Combining both statements:

Case 1: Let's say \(y^2 = 16\), then we can say Y = +4/-4, in this case X > 0 (by putting in statement 1)
Case 2: Let's say \(y^2 = 1600\), then we can say Y = +40/-40, in this case X > 0 (if Y= -40), and X< 0 (if Y= +40)
No definite answer, Insufficient.

'E' is the answer

determine whether x>0 or say x is +ve

#1

x + y = 30
two cases possible ; x=-30 and y=60 ; no
and x=4 and y = 26 ;yes
insufficient
#2
y^2 >10
means y can be atleast +/-4 i.e -3>y and y >3 ; but x is not know insufficient
from 1 &2
we can have possibilities that y=4 and x= 26 ; and x=-4 and y= 34
insufficient
IMO E

Is x > 0 ?

(1) x + y = 30
x and y can take any value
x = -15, y = 45
OR
x = 15, y = 15

INSUFFICIENT.

(2) \(y^2 >10\)
Nothing about x is given.

INSUFFICIENT.

Together 1 and 2.
y = 30 - x
\((30 - x)^2 > 10\)
If x = -10 then \(40^2 > 10\) NO
If x = 70 then \((30 - 70)^2 > 10\) YES
Here it is clear that x takes two different values.

INSUFFICIENT.

Answer E.

Is \(x > 0\)?

(Statement1) : x + y = 30
No info about what y is.
Insufficient

(Statement2): \(y^2 >10\)
Clearly insufficient

Taken together 1&2,
\(x = 30 —y\)
\(y^{2} >10\)

if y = 31, then x = 30–31 = —1(NO)
If y = 5, then x= 30 —5 = 25 (Yes)
Insuffcient
