If I was a betting man, I would put my money down on the continued health and strength of the market for imports.

A. If I were a betting man
B. If I was a betting person
C. If I was a betting man
D. If I were to be a betting man
E. Whether I was a betting man

Can someone please explain why the correct answer is A and not D? Thanks!

If we make a statement that is a wish or a situation contrary to the fact, we use a plural verb.
Option B & C can be eliminated through this.

Option D looks verbose.

Option E Use of 'Whether' does not seems to fit with the intended meaning. I Think when 'Whether' is used 'or not' is implied. Which will change the intended meaning of the sentence.

Hence Option A is a correct answer.
