Answer is D.

The keyword "however" signals a change in the tone of the argument and hence, only option D expresses the change.

I don't understand why answer choice C is wrong, experts please explain the reasoning on this CR question.

I am not an expert, but I will give it a try anyway.

Option C: Offering a reason to take a course of action recommended in the argument:

The question mentions That would be bad advice. I do not think the the BF is offering a reason to take a course, it is just stating ,it has been suggested that diabetics should be advised to drink moderate amounts of coffee, since doing so improves their ability to recognize symptoms of low blood sugar quickly.

Option D: Stating the position to be refuted by the argument:

The argument is indeed refuted, when the author mentions That would be bad advice and goes on explaining why the author believes so.
Therefore D is clearer and linked with what is mentioned in the question.

Diabetics often suffer dangerously low blood sugar levels, which they can correct safely if they notice the symptoms quickly. It has been suggested that diabetics should be advised to drink moderate amounts of coffee, since doing so improves their ability to recognize symptoms of low blood sugar quickly. That would be bad advice, however, since drinking even small amounts of coffee can increase the body's need for sugar in unpredictable ways.

In the argument being made, the part that is in boldface plays which of the following roles?

A) Presenting the conclusion toward which the argument as a whole is directed
B) Providing support for the conclusion of the argument
C) Offering a reason to take a course of action recommended in the argument
D) Stating the position to be refuted by the argument
E) Providing an instance of a general principle articulated in the argument

Hint: Conc. is that would be bad advice, however, since drinking even small amounts of coffee can increase the body's need for sugar in unpredictable ways.

A) Presenting the conclusion toward which the argument as a whole is directed -- it is not a conclusion
B) Providing support for the conclusion of the argument --- It is not in the same direction as the conclusion
C) Offering a reason to take a course of action recommended in the argument -- is offering a take of action, not a reason
D) Stating the position to be refuted by the argument -- Correct
E) Providing an instance of a general principle articulated in the argument[/quote] -- it is not a principle, as "drinking coffee" is rejected by the argument.

Official Answer:
Reasoning: What role does the advice for diabetics to drink coffee play in an argument about safe strategies for avoiding dangerous drops in blood sugar? Since drinking coffee heightens diabetics’ awareness of the symptoms of low blood pressure, the argument might be expected to endorse the advice that diabetics should drink coffee in moderation. The following sentence, however, suggests that coffee consumption could be dangerous for diabetics by destabilizing their blood sugar levels.
A. The recommendation in boldface is described as bad advice in the following sentence, so it is not the argument’s conclusion.
B. The advice for diabetics to drink coffee does not support the conclusion that drinking coffee could be risky for them.
C. The boldface text advises a course of action but does not offer a reason to follow any course of action.
D. Correct. The recommendation that diabetics should drink moderate amounts of coffee is refuted by the following sentence, which suggests that even small amounts of coffee could cause unpredictable shifts in their sugar requirements.
E. The recommendation for diabetics to drink moderate amounts of coffee is specific advice and not a general principle.
The correct answer is D.
