Given: 5x – 8 = 12
Replace x with y + 3 (since we're told x = y + 3) to get: 5(y + 3) – 8 = 12
Add 8 to both sides: 5(y + 3) = 20
Divide both sides by 5 to get: y + 3 = 4
Subtract 3 from both sides: y = 1
Answer: B

equation 1:
5x-8=12
=>5x=20
equation 2:
x=y+3
=>5x= 5y + 15 (multiplied 5 to both sides)
=>20=5y+15 (from equation 1)
=>5y=5
=>y=1
IMO answer is B
