In the figure above, what is x + y in terms of z?

(A) 180 – z
(B) 180 + z
(C) z – 180
(D) z + 180
(E) z

Since the unmarked interior angle of the triangle is congruent with the angle measuring z degrees, it also measures z degrees. Since the sum of the three interior angles of a triangle is 180 degrees, we have:

x + y + z = 180

x + y = 180 - z

Answer: A
