has anyone contacted the admissions/financial aid office to get more money in fellowship? any idea as to where to start - email, phone, doing it before deposit is paid?
I emailed the financial aid office a quick note explaining the reasons for asking for more funds. Seeing that the deposit is due tomorrow, you probably will have to pay the deposit to secure your spot. They also mentioned to me that they do NOT match offers from other schools 1:1.
thanks! how quick was the turn-around time in them coming back to you? and i mention the deposit because i imagine that if i sign the deposit, i lose some "negotiating" power, or is that not a big problem?
About a week after I emailed them, they let me know the timeline for the process. They told me they would decide by February 7th, so I'm not sure how it's handled now. I guess you lose some negotiating power, but some people pay the deposit and later decide to go to another program, so they will still want to try to keep you there. Yes you will lose the $2k if you decide later to go somewhere else, but if the other program is a better fit or offered more fellowship support, then $2k is not much in the long run. I would suggest telling them you are going to pay the deposit to secure your spot but that you are still waiting on other schools to make a final decision. I also would phrase it in a nicer way, you don't want them to feel like you are playing them or threatening not to go there if they don't pay up.
