“During the recent campaign for mayor, a clear majority of city readers who responded to our survey indicated a desire for more news about city government. To increase circulation, and thus our profits, we should therefore consistently devote a greater proportion of space in all editions of The Clarion to coverage of local news.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
ANSWER
The author concludes that to increase profits and circulation of the Clarine, a metropolitan newspaper, who are contemplating to block huge space of their newspaper column in local news. He concluded this by analyzing the positive number of readers in favor of city news. Here the author not only overlooked the possibility of other factors but also based it on false analogy.
First, the author mention that only majority of readers who took part in the survey desire to have more local news. But here the author fails to take into account what kind of readers. For instance, maybe survey include in and out reader, who reads once in a week or novel readers. There might be another possibility, the survey was undertaken when the mayor election was on peek, so maybe people are inquisitive about city news until the elections are not over and that is why most reader voted for city news.
Second, the argument assumes that it will help in to increase the newspaper circulation and thus escalation of profits. This statement is made on flawed assumption. There might be a chance that the city population consist of less no. of people who are enthusiastic in reading and hence contribute low population of such no. who devote less time in reading than accumulating their time in some extra cocurricular activity. Since, the author didn’t consider other factors affecting the profits of the company, this statement is weak.
The argument could have been strengthened if the author provided more elements to differentiate between the given information and its after effects and not inferred on mere assumptions. And be more accurate between reader population and revenue of the company.
