What is the average (arithmetic mean) of x, y, and z ? [#permalink]
What is the average (arithmetic mean) of x, y, and z ?

(1) x + y = 5

(2) y + z = 7

WE have to find x+y+z /3

X +y = 5
We know nothing about z, so Insufficient.

y+z = 7
We know nothing about x so insufficient

Even after combining the statements there is one variable left whose value we do not know for sure.

y= 5-x

x+ 5-x +z /3 =5+z /3 z is unknown here.
If I try to put z = 7-y we shall have 5+7 -y /3, we still have one variable left and is not sufficient to answer the question.
