What is the value of |y − 1| ?

(1) (y − 7)(y + 5) = 0 --> y = 7 or y = -5, in either case |y − 1| = 6. Sufficient.

(2) 2y + 10 = 0 --> y = -5 --> |y − 1| = 6. Sufficient.

Answer: D.

(1) (y − 7)(y + 5) = 0
y=7 or y= -5

Putting these values of y in |y − 1|, we get 6 as the answer. Hence sufficient

(2) 2y + 10 = 0
y+5=0
y=-5

We get the answer by putting y= -5. Hence, sufficient.

D is the answer

Statement #2-- can solve a unique value for y --- suff
statement #1--y=7 or -5 in both cases, the expression =1 suff .. we can a unique value for both vals of y.

Trap: (1) has multiple solutions for y but f(y) = 6, so we have a single solution and thus (1) is sufficient.
