1. For the first mile, we should divide by two-part. first, $5.5 for the first 1/5 mile, rest 4/5 mile for $1.5 per 1/5 mile
=$5.5+1.5*4=11.5
2. $1.5 for 1/5mile = $7.5 for 1 mile
The Joan total take 8+3.6-1(first mile) =10.6 need pay 10.6*7.5=$79.5
3. Joan let driver wait 9 minutes
wait fee $0.2 for 1 minute
0.2*9=$1.8
4. Add 1+2+3
=11.5+79.5+1.8=92.8 . ===== c

The number of miles driven, in fifths, is:

11.6/(1/5) = 11.6 x 5 = 58.

Thus the total charge was:

5.5 + 1.5(57) + 9(0.2) = 5.5 + 85.5 + 1.8 = 92.80 dollars.

Given: A taxi service charges $5.50 for the first 1/5th of a mile, $1.50 for each additional 1/5th of a mile, and 20 cents per minute of waiting time. Joan took a cab from her place to a flower shop 8 miles away, where she bought a bouquet, then another 3.6 miles to her mother’s place. The driver had to wait 9 minutes while she bought the bouquet.

Asked: What was the fare?

1/5th of a mile = .2 miles

Total fare = $5.5 (.2 miles) + (8+3.6-.2)*1.5/.2 + $0.2*9 = 5.5 + 85.5 + 1.8 = $92.8
