Aggressive cost-cutting campaigns have shown promise in the company's publishing division, the home to a few new startups that have grown at the same pace as the startups disrupting the industry through free journalism and user-submitted articles.

A. that have grown at the same pace as the startups -maintains the tense and meaning, and usage of ' as the' correct.

B. that will have grown at the same pace as have the startups- paragraph used present tense.

C. that have grown at the same pace as had those startups- wordy and wrong meaning when used with 'disrupting the industry........'

D. growing at the same pace as those did wrong meaning when used with 'disrupting the industry........' tense

E. growing at the same pace as those were wrong meaning when used with 'disrupting the industry........' tense

Official Explanation



Creating a filter: the original sentence may sound a little funny but not be obviously in error. So we go to answer choice (B), ready to eliminate.

Finding objective defects: choice (B) is contrary to the sentence's intended meaning. In the meaning of the sentence, the campaigns have already shown promise, so the use of the future tense in (B) is not appropriate. Choice (C) has a similar problem: the final modifying phrase, with the word "disrupting," indicates that the intended meaning of this sentence is that startups are currently disrupting the industry, so the past perfect tense in the answer choice, "as had those startups," is contrary to intended meaning. Choice (C) is therefore out. Moreover, (D) and (E) have the same past/present mismatch, and are therefore out. We've eliminated all but one choice.

The correct answer is (A).

I am not very convinced that D is wrong though I admit that A is the best choice.
D: " ... in the company's publishing division, the home to a few new startups growing at the same pace as those were disrupting the industry through free journalism and user-submitted articles."
The whole phrase "growing at ... articles" modifies "startups" and we are comparing new startups that are growing now with the startups that were disrupting the industry in the past.
