(A) while earlier his father has been --> Verb-Tense error

(B) where his father earlier is --> Incorrect usage of "where", and Verb-Tense error

(C) just as earlier his father had been --> Correct, rectifies Verb-Tense error, and conveys intended meaning

(D) as his earlier father has been --> Changes meaning

(E) his father earlier being --> Awkward

MANHATTAN REVIEW OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:



If the first part of the sentence is in the past tense, then what happened earlier should be in the past perfect tense. That eliminates A, B, D and E. Choice C is the correct answer.

I rejected choice (c) as there was no commonality between being a president and senator. I don't see any proper answer. unless we are trying to say that both are in politics or something in that line. Does GMAT allows this missing context?

To answer your query, yes; the point of comparison here is that both Al Gore and his father held elected offices; this is a perfectly acceptable comparison.
