I don't understand why "as old as" is wrong. I knew that a precursor is someone that was BEFORE another. In this sense, how can the cultures of Western Europe be older than those of Eastern Europe? The cultures of Eastern Europe are precursors; they appeared before!. :s

Here we are comparing between the Earliest Farming Practices in Western Europe and Farming Practice in Eastern Europe.Precursor here means that Farming Practices that came before Today's date in Eastern Europe not the western Europe so they really not occurred before Earliest Farming Practices in Western Europe.

You are comparing 'the farming cultures of West. Europe at almost 1000 years' with ' the farming cultures in Eastern Europe'.
If you use 'as old as', the sentence would mean 'exact almost 1000 years of the Eastern Europe'.

Because you can't conclude that the farming cultures in Eastern Europe and Western Europe are exactly equal, this comparison is wrong.

The unfolding of the riddle lies in the word purportedly meaning, supposedly. The so called Eastern cultures are supposed to have been the precursors, meaning they are older than the wrestern. In that case, they cannot be as old. This is the first logical error.
The reality is that, they are not even as old as the western. In fact, the western are older than the eastern by at least 1000 years. Thbis is what the passage intends.

Of course C is wrong because of using the adverb –purportedly- to modify precursors.

should not "D" be grammatically correct if we assume the intend of the sentence is to convey that the Easterns were not indeed older, both dates back at same period instead?
