The unfolding of the riddle lies in the word purportedly meaning, supposedly. The so called Eastern cultures are supposed to have been the precursors, meaning they are older than the wrestern. In that case, they cannot be as old. This is the first logical error.
The reality is that, they are not even as old as the western. In fact, the western are older than the eastern by at least 1000 years. Thbis is what the passage intends.

Of course C is wrong because of using the adverb –purportedly- to modify precursors.

should not "D" be grammatically correct if we assume the intend of the sentence is to convey that the Easterns were not indeed older, both dates back at same period instead?
