Best target schools for employment in NYC?

Hi all,

So I'm looking to find employment (as an international student) in NYC upon post-MBA graduation. My question is, outside of the Top 8 US schools (H/S/W, Booth, Tuck, Sloan, Columbia, Kellogg) what are the target schools that typically send the most students/alumni to NYC post-grad?

Obviously the local schools (Cornell and Stern) would round out next tier of US programs after the Top 8. What are the others? And any non-US schools that have decent connections to NYC?

Just trying to focus my applications right now. Thanks!

Yale is closer than Cornell, so I'd throw that on the list. Same with some of the other "east side" schools such as UVA, Duke, and UNC-KF.

Oh really, so would you say that any of the Top 20 schools in the northeastern part of the US would generally place fairly well into NYC? Are there any that are targeted by NYC more than others?

I was always under the (misguided) assumption that the lower-ranked schools are more regional in nature, but wasn't sure just 'how' regional they were for post-grad employment. i.e. UNC-KF is mostly Charlotte/NC area, Tepper is mostly Pittsburgh area, etc.

Northeastern Top 20 schools (other than those in the Top 8):
- Stern
- Cornell
- Yale
- Darden
- UNC-KF
- Tepper
- Fuqua
- Ross
- McDonough

Why would you assume Stanford, Kellogg and Booth are better than Stern for NYC job placement?

I'm not assuming that they're necessarily better, but rather I was just stating that the schools within the Top 8 have strong national brand recognition and thus likely won't have much trouble placing students into NYC, whereas other schools outside of that tier are more 'regional' in nature. Stern would obviously have the strongest ties to NYC out of the bunch.

Ok I see your point, but in my opinion that would depend on what you're recruiting for. New York-based investment banks will recruit at all top national schools. Not many New York-based CPG companies looking for marketing people are going to fly to California to recruit at Stanford. Their yield would be too low and the cost would be too high. You could certainly network your way to any New York job with a Stanford MBA, but that would require substantial effort and expense on your part to travel to NYC regularly.
