+1 for D.

A) spent time as a cryptanalyst in Alexandria, where he had broken Italian ciphers before moving --> Incorrect usage of past perfect

B) had spent time as a cryptanalyst in Alexandria, when he had broken Italian ciphers before being moved --> Incorrect usage of "when", "being", and past perfect

C) spent time as a cryptanalyst in Alexandria, when he had broken Italian ciphers before moving --> Incorrect usage of "when" and past perfect

D) spent time as a cryptanalyst in Alexandria, where he broke Italian ciphers before moving --> Correct, rectifies Verb-Tense error and conveys intended meaning

E) spent time as a cryptanalyst in Alexandria, where he broke Italian ciphers before having been moved --> Verb-Tense error

Hence, D.

I don't particularly see anything wrong with the usage of past perfect in A. You are allowed to use it though the time sequence is obvious

Okay!
So what do you think might be the error in option A rahulkashyap ?

Although the usage of past perfect in a sentence with clear time sequencing is optional, I would still choose 'D' over 'A' as it is correct and is succinct.

Hi rahulkashyap,

Maybe I can help here.
First of all we are using past perfect even when 'before' is present in the sentence. 'Before' and 'After' are such words that help in setting the time sequence.
So if we use both 'before' and 'past perfect' we make things redundant.

Now I know we can use 'past perfect' with 'before'. But that is when we don't have a better option than that.
But here we have 'D' which helps in removing this redundancy.
So a less redundant and clear answer would be D as compared to A.

Hope it helps
