Environmentalist: Pure bio-diesel is much more economical than impure bio-diesel, which is mixed with petroleum because pure bio-diesel is entirely petroleum-free, and the price of oil is predicted to rise due to the worldwide dwindling of oil reserves.

Chemist: I strongly disagree. Pure bio-diesel is an economical disaster compared to impure bio-diesel because due to its vegetable origin, bio-diesel is susceptible to mold.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the chemist's objection to the environmentalist's claim?

A)Even before the rise in the price of oil, petroleum is more expensive than the vegetables used to manufacture bio-diesel

B)Due to political factors, the government has decided to withdraw its subsidies of pure bio-diesel

C)Environmentalists are trying to limit petroleum consumption in order to reduce toxic emissions into the earth's atmosphere

D)Impure bio-diesel has more chances of creating problems in car engines, a fact which raises the costs associated with it

E)Even the slightest concentration of petroleum is toxic enough to kill mold

I went for B and could not relate how E does the work.

Thanks.

E seems best: Even the slightest concentration of petroleum is toxic enough to kill mold

the Environmentalist is calming that Pure bio-diesel is much more economical than impure bio-diesel. the reason he is citing is the presence of petrol in "impure bio-diesel"

the Chemist is rejecting the idea of the environmentalist and claims that Pure bio-diesel is an economical disaster compared to impure bio-diesel because due to its vegetable origin, bio-diesel is susceptible to mold

now to support the object of chemist we need to show that impure bio-diesel is better than pure bio diesel .while doing so we need to keep close to argument of chemist .E does that job !!

I absolutely hate E as an answer but the more you think about it, the more it makes sense.

We're looking to strengthen the claim that impure bio-diesel is an economically better choice. Looking at the possible answers:
A. This supports the environmentalist's claim, as it shows that petroleum is more expensive and, therefore, a bad economic decision to make.
B. Political factors are never brought in. That aside, subsidies do not necessitate lower prices or higher prices.
C. While environmentalists do support the environment, reducing petroleum consumption does not mean that using impure bio-diesels are definitely more economically sound. We don't know if they're talking about an economic impact in the long or short run, and so this may not strengthen the scientist's view.
D. Cars and associated costs are outside the scope of the argument. The concept of external costs are not mentioned as either argument.
E. The chemist's argument hinges upon the growth of mold in pure bio-diesel, implying mold's destructive nature. Even in the event that petroleum were insanely expensive and a single droplet of petroleum cost more than an entire barrel of bio-diesel, if a vanishingly small amount of inordinately priced petroleum could preserve an infinite volume of bio-diesel, then no bio-diesel would never go to waste. Therefore the chemist's argument would be supported by this fact.

In this question the environmentalist says that pure bio diesel is more economical than impure biodiesel. This is because, impure biodiesel is mixed with petroleum, which in itself is expensive.
Also, the price of petroleum is going to increase further with the worldwide dwindling of oil reserves. So, impure biodiesel will be much more expensive than its present price.

The chemist says in return to environmentalist that... even if you save money using pure biodiesel, the pure biodiesel will harm the engines of the vehicles. Since the pure biodiesel is of vegetable origin, it is highly susceptible to mold formation. Whereas in impure biodiesel the petroleum will prevent the mold formation and will not harm the engines of the vehicles.

Lets check the options...

A)This is an obvious fact... but this option does not point towards the essence of what the chemist had said. So, Irrelevant and wrong.
B)Totally out of scope. So, wrong.
C)True that environmentalists are limiting petroleum consumption, but it doesn't strengthen chemists objection.. rather it mildly supports the environmentalist's argument. So, wrong.
D)This is totally opposite answer to what chemist says.IT weakens the argument face down. So, wrong.

E)YES, only mold is responsible for the problems in the engines as per chemist. So, even adding a little petroleum to pure biodiesel will suffice. This is the answer.

So, E is the answer.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the chemist's objection to the environmentalist's claim?

A)Even before the rise in the price of oil, petroleum is more expensive than the vegetables used to manufacture bio-diesel- INCORRECT as this answer choice supports the enviornmentalist claim and it does not affects Chemists argument at all
B)Due to political factors, the government has decided to withdraw its subsidies of pure bio-diesel - Incorrect as OUT OF SCOPE
C)Environmentalists are trying to limit petroleum consumption in order to reduce toxic emissions into the earth's atmosphere INCORRECT as this answer choice is strengthening environmentalist claim slightly and not supporting chemists claim
D)Impure bio-diesel has more chances of creating problems in car engines, a fact which raises the costs associated with it - INCORRECT as this answer choice is weakening chemist's claim
E)Even the slightest concentration of petroleum is toxic enough to kill mold- CORRECT and in line with argument as it shows that impure bio diesel is better than pure bio diesel
