Hi,
if we have to find a value of x from the given values, do NOT get into solving equation..
SUBSTITUTE each choice and solve..

A. -9 ................. |4x+6|=30.......... |4*-9+6|=30... yes
B. -4 ................. |4x+6|=30.......... |4*-4+6|=10... no
C. 2 ................. |4x+6|=30.......... |4*2+6|=14... no
D. 4 ................. |4x+6|=30.......... |4*4+6|=22... no
E. 9 ................. |4x+6|=30.......... |4*9+6|=42... no

Answer will be A. -9 and I would always like to approach this question as chetan2u has shown, here is just the theoretical part -

|4x+6|=30 can have 2 values of x

1. (4x+6)=30

Or, 4x = 24

Or, x = 6

2. -( 4x+6) = 30

Or, -4x - 6 = 30

Or, -4x = 36

Or x = -9

Since we have only option (A) as -9 , this will be our answer !!

This question can either be solved by traditional method of solving mod equations or by putting values from the option.

METHOD I: Traditional Method

|4x+6|=30 => 4x+6= 30 or 4x+6 = -30

so the plausible solutions would be: x=6 or -9

METHOD II: Using the options.

Out of all the options, substituting x=-9 will give us the desired result.

Note: Use your discretion to choose which method will be faster. This will come to you with more and more practice. :)
