In a certain community orchestra, 40 percent of the members are string players. If 28 percent of the members are female string players, how many of the members are female string players?

(1) Exactly 120 of the members are string players.

(2) Exactly 35 percent of the players who are not string players are male.

1) With this info, we can find the total of players (120/40%) and then find the number of female string players (18% of the total players). Sufficient.
2) We're only given an extra percentage and not a concrete number so we'll only be able to find percentages, not exact numbers. Insufficient.

Given information:
Out of total members - 40% are string players & 28% are women string players

We need either the
(a)total number of members or
(b)total number of string players or
(c)members who don't play string to solve this question.

Statement (1) provides this (b)and hence is sufficient
Statement (2) tells us that out of 60% who are not string players, 35% are male and by extension 25% are female. This tells us nothing about the total members or number of members who don't play at all. This is insufficient
