In MS Solutions, majority of the IT professionals work on Projects involving coding. A survey done last year found that as high as 30% of female IT professionals but only 10% of male ones committed errors while writing codes. The findings of the survey clearly indicate that a longer stint at writing codes and therefore a greater proficiency in coding makes male IT professionals much better at writing codes than their female counterparts.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) The male IT professional do not constitute a significantly larger percentage of IT professionals at MS Solutions than the female ones.

(B) The higher percentage of errors in newly joined IT professionals as compared to that in employees with a few years’ experience is attributable to the greater amount of coding experience.

(C) The per capita coding work done by male IT professionals is not significantly lower than that done by their female counterparts.

(D) The client companies of MS prefer their projects to be handled by male IT professionals because of the lower error margins.

(E) The male IT professionals, in general do a comparable amount of coding with reference to the female IT professionals.

The question is not self made. I got it through a study group. The question was pretty tough so thought of sharing. Plus I'm not able to find 'add a tag' option beside 'hide tag' so as to tag in 'other sources'.

Premise P1: In MS Solutions, majority of the IT professionals work on Projects involving coding.
Premise P2: A survey done last year found that as high as 30% of female IT professionals but only 10% of male ones committed errors while writing codes.
Conclusion C: The findings of the survey clearly indicate that a longer stint at writing codes and therefore a greater proficiency in coding makes male IT professionals much better at writing codes than their female counterparts.

(A) The male IT professional do not constitute a significantly larger percentage of IT professionals at MS Solutions than the female ones.

Even if male IT professional do not constitute a significantly larger percentage of IT professionals at MS Solutions than the female ones, the conclusion if not effected since it depends on error percentage of male and female IT professionals irrespective of their mix.

(B) The higher percentage of errors in newly joined IT professionals as compared to that in employees with a few years’ experience is attributable to the greater amount of coding experience.
The argument does not mention that female IT professionals are less experienced than their males counterparts.

(C) The per capita coding work done by male IT professionals is not significantly lower than that done by their female counterparts.
The argument mentions a longer stint at writing codes and therefore a greater proficiency in coding makes male IT professionals much better at writing codes than their female counterparts.
The per capita coding work done by male IT professionals is not significantly lower than that done by their female counterparts. The statement provides that male IT professionals have longer stints at writing codes and have greater proficiency in coding and fills the gap in reasoning.

(D) The client companies of MS prefer their projects to be handled by male IT professionals because of the lower error margins.
The statement does not effect the conclusion. This is an additional information.

(E) The male IT professionals, in general do a comparable amount of coding with reference to the female IT professionals.
If this statement is true then it does not provide reasons for male IT professionals to be better than their female counterparts at writing codes.

The argument that "a longer stint at writing codes and therefore a greater proficiency in coding makes male IT professionals much better at writing codes" assumes correlation between experience and percentage or errors or positive or proficiency to write codes, which is the main theme here.

Assumption B is basically saying the same thing, which seems to me like the more important assumption.

Assumption C on per capita coding work is linking the "longer stint" to "experience", meaning the longer you work does not necessarily mean the amount or intensity of work done, unless the per capital work is more or less the same. This can be an assumption too but in my opinion, that's a less important or more trivial assumption. It's like saying - well you have to assume that well the male workers didn't just sit there and do nothing/less work in terms of their longer stint.

Therefore, I chose B.

Anyway, I don't think this is a good question. GG
