It is usual for scientists and social scientists to abandon their theories only if another more attractive theory comes along and not when they have been proved incorrect.

A. their theories only if another more attractive theory comes along and not when they have been proved incorrect ---- Are they all abandoning their theories just because another single theory comes long. Not sensible

B. a theory not because it has been proved incorrect, but because another more attractive theory comes along --- seems to be good,
The correlative conjunction //ism is maintained in -- not because … but because--

C. their theories not when they have been proved incorrect, but because other more attractive theories come along ----- reference of 'they' is ambiguous. Does 'they' refer to scientists or theories?

D. a theory only when other more attractive ones come along, rather than when they are proved wrong -- 1. Pronoun reference ambiguity 2. Pronoun number agreement - a theory and they.

E. their theories not if they have been proved wrong, but if another more attractive theory comes along -- 1. Pronoun problem 2. Do they abandon all their individual theories just when another single theory surfaces?

Clean (B) for me , for the use of correct parallelism structure not because..........but because
