Last year, in Country X, smaller private jets were involved in a greater number of accidents than larger commercial jets were involved in. It is well known that larger commercial jets are flown by flight crews more experienced on average than the flight crews on smaller private jets. Clearly, it is the greater on average experience of the flight crews in larger commercial jets that is responsible for this difference in accident statistics.
Conclusion. Greater on average experience of the flight crews in larger commercial jets that is responsible for this difference in accident statistics
Reasoning for the Argument. Less experience of the pilots -- > Higher probability for accidents. (Cause and Effect).
Pre-thinking. If any other cause can be made attributable for difference in accident statistics b/w larger commercial jets and smaller private jets, the reasoning doesn't hold.
In evaluating the argument, it would be useful to answer each of the following EXCEPT:
A. Of all the flights made in Country X last year, what proportion of those flights were made by smaller private jets?
If 'Higher' proportion of flights by smaller private jets, then Less experience of the pilots can't be attributed to higher probability for accidents in respect of smaller private jets
B. Do larger commercial jets have flight safety features more advanced than those often found on smaller private jets?
If 'More advanced flightsafety features' in larger commercial jets , then Less experience of the pilots can't be attributed to higher probability for accidents in respect of smaller private jets
C. Do flight crews on smaller private jets receive the same amount of formal classroom training as is received by the flight crews on larger commercial jets?
If 'Less amount of formal classroom training' is the factor leading to higher number of accidents for smaller private jets, then Less experience of the pilots can't be attributed to higher probability for accidents in respect of smaller private jets
D. What proportion of flights made by smaller private jets in Country X last year were piloted by pilots who have experience flying larger commercial jets?
It is to be noted that only the proportion of flights made by smaller private jets in Country X last year piloted by pilots who have experience flying larger commercial jets --> will not invalidate the reasoning based on the 'quantum' of experience possessed by pilots, since there is no mention of duration of experience in respect of pilots, with experience flying larger commercial jets, now flying the smaller private jets
E. Do flight crews flying smaller private jets typically have more tiring flight schedules than are had by flight crews flying larger commercial jets?
If 'more tiring flight schedules for pilots' is the factor leading to higher number of accidents for smaller private jets, then Less experience of the pilots can't be attributed to higher probability for accidents in respect of smaller private jets
(D) is the CORRECT answer
