Is adding Recommender's personal e-mail ok? I have seen that INSEAD asks for official work e-mail. This is a problem with many recommenders as they do not want to get into HR approvals and all.

Please provide feedback!

thanks in advance

Bump!

Very useful post, I personally got travel souvenirs for my future recommenders, way before I am asking them for recommendation. As I work with the government and my budget cannot be >$20 (it would be perceived negatively and my seniors would decline if the gift is too expensive), I got them exotic teas and coffees from turkey, teas and coffee from vietnam on a previous visit, or any other souvenir. This way you can even pass off the gift as being a memento from your travel and is an ice breaker for better relations :).

Hi souvik101990 , thank you, this is very useful info.

Not sure if this will gain any traction in an old post, but are there any tips for reaching out to recommenders while working remotely and being only able to communicate with my managers over Skype?

It's a very different situation compared to being in an office where one can casually walk up to his/her manager to ask for a coffee 'catch-up'. Speaking over Skype seems too objective-driven and messaging managers seems too casual.

I was on a webinar with Yale today and the adcom member said recs move the needle, not the essay.

The first critical step in the process is to choose the right recommenders. Most schools require 2 letters of recommendation, and prefer that your first letter comes from your direct supervisor or manager. We agree that this is the ideal recommendation as he or she is often best suited to speak to your strengths and accomplishments. However, there are times when your direct manager is not the right or ideal individual.

Once you’ve chosen your recommenders and they have agreed to support you, your work is far from over! These letters are not a mere formality; rather, the letters of recommendation provide the admissions committees with additional perspective into who you are as a professional. This is a prime opportunity to support your application narrative and provide additional examples of the strengths and abilities you’ve showcased in your essays.
