Not having the technical background, many people do not succeed in correcting computer malfunctions even after making sense and reading instructions

A. many people do not succeed in correcting computer malfunctions even after making sense and reading instructions

This answer choice is grammatically incorrect. The verb making sense requires a preposition in order to logically connect to instructions. Many people do not succeed in making sense of the instructions. If we do not add the preposition of, the sentence becomes illogical as it seems that the people are making sense.

What helps us identify this question as a Split Construction question and identify the mistake is the following Stop Sign: A split construction: Verb A + and/or + Verb B + object


B. many people do not succeed in correcting computer malfunctions even after they have read and made sense of the instructions

This answer choice corrects the original mistake by adding the required preposition of after the verb making sense.


C. computer malfunctions are not corrected successfully by many people, even after reading and making sense of the instructions

Although this answer choice corrects the original Split Construction error by inserting the preposition of, it creates a Dangling Modifier. The original sentence begins with a modifier: Not having the technical background. A modifier should be placed right next to the noun it describes. B seems correct. read and made sense of --- the instruction looks quiet ok and parallel.
The problem with A is with making sense and reading instructions. Many people are making sense of what ?? I don't think that makes sense at all.

E : can be eliminate as "correcting … successfully" makes redundancy.
C,D : misplaced modifier error.
A : even though seem correct because "making sense and reading instructions" are in parallel but there is no meaning of "even after making sense"
option B best to select among all.
