If n is total books, e is english and b is bangla,

(1) 1/5 (n-1) = e-1
From this we cannot find n, since there are two variables

(2) 1/4(n-2) = e
From this we cannot find n, since there are two variables

By combining the two, we now have 2 equations and 2 variables. Solving, we get e=6, n = 26

Of the N books on a Table, some are English and the rest are Bangla. What is the Value of N?

(1) If 1 English book was removed from the N books, 1/5 of the remaining books would be English.

(2) If 2 Bangla books were removed from the N books, 1/4 of the remaining books would be English.

so all books are either english or bangla..

(1) If 1 English book was removed from the N books, 1/5 of the remaining books would be English.
so \(\frac{(e-1)}{(n-1)}=\frac{1}{5}.......5e-5=n-1......5e=n-6.\)
many possibilities..
insuff

(2) If 2 Bangla books were removed from the N books, 1/4 of the remaining books would be English.
so \(\frac{(b-2)}{(n-2)}=\frac{1}{4}.......4e-4=n-2......4e=n+2.\)
many possibilities..
insuff

combined..

two variables two distinct equations..
sufficient

C

Could you please recheck your equations please? I think your first equation should be 5e=n+4 and for your statement two solution, the numerator should have e instead of b-2 I think.
